Amanda Seyfried is one of Hollywood’s best loved actors – and among her many roles is that in firm fan favorite, Mamma Mia!.

The now 39-year-old plays Sophie in the movie and its prequel Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again, which are based on the hits by Swedish pop group, ABBA.

And after laughing that she is asked by fans about the possibility of a third film in the franchise “all the time, every week”, Seyfried clarified on some comments she made five months ago.

The Mean Girls star previously said she wanted singer Sabrina Carpenter to play her daughter in the next movie – potentially alongside Cher as her grandmother, and a somehow back-from-the-dead Meryl Streep as her mother.

Appearing on The Tonight Show, host Jimmy Fallon asked Seyfried if she would be up for shooting Mamma Mia! 3.

“Yeah, absolutely,” she replied. “I can see the future, and it looks like before 2038, we’re going to be on that Greek island.”

Fallon then asked about the rumors that Carpenter may be cast, to which Seyfried cleared up, “Listen, I’m aging, as everybody does – it’s fine, it’s great, I love it.

“Somebody said she was a fan of the musical and was like ‘Can she play your daughter?’ They fed it to me. And I was like, ‘Yeah, that would be great’.

“It’s not that I was like, ‘You know who should play my daughter?’ But big fan, big fan. Big fan! Putting it out there. It’s going to happen.”

Seyfried originally made the comments back in October.

“You’re right, actually, [it] doesn’t matter,” agreed Seyfried. “You know what? Old age makeup for me. That’s what it will be. … I’m an actor. I’ll do it. If Sabrina Carpenter wants to play my daughter, I’ll make it happen. It’s fine. I’m a big fan.”

Fans go wild for Amanda Seyfried’s comments about Sabrina Carpenter

Although Seyfried made it pretty clear that she definitely didn’t have the final say over any casting decisions – or the creation of a third Mamma Mia! movie, for that matter – fans on social media still went wild for her words.

Calling the possibility a “dream casting” and saying they were “manifesting” the comments, one fan went on, “Sabrina would actually love this. Acting and singing in one? Plus it’s a classic movie?? I would like to see it!”

Another added, “I’m actually begging for this to happen.”

Asking producers not to “play with their feelings”, others commented on how the 14 year age gap between the two women wasn’t enough to warrant a mother-daughter casting… but they would “allow it anyway”.

“Love them both so much but I’m pretty sure her daughter would be like seven right now,” noted one, as someone else agreed, “Little sister would be more realistic.”

A third went on, “I’d be willing to ignore the way too small age gap because this would be iconic.”

Others couldn’t resist making a few jokes using Carpenter’s own number one hits.

“Please Please Please make it happen!” someone laughed, as another referenced her smash hit, Espresso, and said, “I’m working late… ‘cause I don’t know who my grandpa is.”

While Seyfried joked about getting the gang back together at some point in the next decade, rumors have been swirling for a while that the third film is in the works – with Christine Baranski all but confirming the development.

The actor – who plays Tanya in the movies – weighed in on the ‘will they, won’t they’ rumors, and revealed she had recently spent time with Judy Craymer, who produced the films.

“I was in London with Judy at our favorite watering hole, she is planning Mamma Mia! 3,” Baranski said. “She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen. That’s all I can say!

“But, it’s not like, ‘Oh, I wish it could happen!’ Judy Craymer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Craymer to get everybody back together.”

“People are drawn to happiness and to joy, not doom and gloom. Mamma Mia! made so many millions of people around the world happy.”
