Bella Ramsey has defended gendered categories at awards shows such as the Emmys and said he wouldn’t mind being nominated in the Lead Actress category.

Ramsey, who can be currently seen playing Ellie in the second season of smash-hit HBO series The Last of Us, has been tipped to land a nomination for an Emmy. But, while Ramsey identifies as non-binary and prefers to use they/them pronouns, the actor added that they have no problem with gendered categories.

Talking to Louis Theroux on his eponymous podcast on Spotify – via Deadline – Ramsey said that it was fine for people to “call me how you see me.”

Important recognition

Ramsey added that gendered awards categories are important so that “recognition for women in the industry is preserved.”

They added that there isn’t an easy solution to representing non-binary people in awards categories: “I don’t have the answer and I wish that there was something that was an easy way around it, but I think that it is really important that we have a female category and a male category.”

But Ramsey, who came out as non-binary in 2023 in an interview with the New York Times, added that she isn’t comfortable with the label of ‘actress’. “I have a guttural, ‘That’s not quite right’ instinct to it,” they said. “But I don’t take it too seriously… it doesn’t feel like an attack on my identity.”

Bella Ramsey Emmy nomination

The English actor was nominated for an Emmy for her work in the first season of The Last of Us in 2023. If they are nominated again this time around, they could be the youngest winner of the Outstanding Lead Actress award – a title currently held by Zendaya for her work in the drama series Euphoria.

Ramsey has also recently spoken about recently receiving an autism diagnosis, and how that was “freeing” and that the label was “so helpful” for them.

In an interview with Vogue Ramsey said they’d “always wondered” if they were autistic, which their diagnosis later confirmed.

“It enables me to walk through the world with more grace towards myself about not being able to do the easy everyday tasks that everyone else seems to be able to do,” they said.
