Finally, Spike has spoken! Yes, we have been waiting for Buffy’s vampire love to speak out, and he did. James Marsters, or Spike as Buffy fans know him, spoke on his social media about the reboot. His comment comes after many fans expressed an interest in his thoughts on the Buffy reboot and awaited his statement. Many cast members on Buffy have spoken out in support of Sarah Michelle Gellar heading a reboot. There are still cast members who haven’t said anything as well.

Marsters was a fan favorite on the cult TV show, which ran on the WB network from 1997 until 2003. On the show, he played Spike or William The Bloody, a murderous British vampire who was out to kill Buffy. As nineties shows go, love always finds a way, and Spike eventually softens and falls in love with the slayer.

Fans shipped the couple, also known as Spuffy, and loved Spike because of his charisma, sass, and well…look at him. Peroxide blonde was in during the 90s, ok? The relationship set up the formula of fantasy love triangles and drew a huge audience to the show.

Well, this isn’t the update you might hope for. Marsters took to his Instagram to address the Buffy reboot. Buffy fans are passionate and will hound you until you speak out.

Marsters starts his video by greeting fans and signing autographs. “First of all, I think I’m just going to get the elephant in the room out of the way, which is it’s not a good thing for me to talk about the Buffy reboot,” he says.

Not a good start…But, go on.

He apologizes to fans eagerly awaiting his response to the Buffy reboot news. The Buffy star also explains why he doesn’t want to talk about it too much. Addressing the fans, he says: “In the interest of having the project be the best that it can be, it’s best that I keep my mouth shut right now. So I’m going to do that.”

However, Marsters went on to give his opinion on the reboot saying he is “very excited” to “learn more about the journey of Buffy Summers and how she saves the world.”

Hasn’t she saved the world enough? Buffy even went to Heaven for her efforts.

He also echoed a sentiment by other cast members who said the world needs Buffy. Previously, Charisma Carpenter who plays Cordelia said something similar on Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Instagram, saying, “Could there be a more relevant time for such a story?!” She also congratulated her Buffy co-star on the reboot.

Fan reaction

Fans expressed understanding for Marsters not wanting to speak much about the reboot.

On his Instagram post, one fan said: “If the Buffy revival happens I hope to see a new slayer be Buffy’s daughter and maybe have either Spike Or Angel be the father.”

But vampires can’t have babies, can they?

Another fan agreed with Marsters decision to not say much on the reboot. It is worth noting the cast has positive opinions, and nobody has said anything overtly negative.

The user said: “Sometimes you just gotta keep your mouth shut, that just gets more talk going from other people, lol.” Well, you can make a headline out of it!

Finally, another fan said Marsters was “in trouble” unless Spike came back. Of all the characters to return, Spike is among the fans most wanted, alongside Angel and Buffy herself.

Spike did come and go throughout the series. He was introduced in season 2 as an antagonist to Buffy, where he left and came back. In season 3 he leaves after the gang’s battle with the mayor but returns in season 4. The vampire repeats this pattern, but his biggest absence comes from the season 5 finale until season 6.

Will Marsters return in the Buffy reboot?

As much as we’d love to see Spike back, we’re not Marsters would return. As a vampire, the actor would’ve considerably aged since the show ended. Buffy ended 22 years ago, and the episode School Hard where Spike first appeared aired in September 1997. Even then Marsters was 35, and he was 40 years old when the show’s last episode Chosen aired in May 2003.

Now he is 62, so making that work would be difficult. The rumored plot of the show will focus on Buffy training a new slayer, which could work as she could become a Watcher like Giles, which makes her age more believable. But Spike’s? Not so much.

Logistics aside, we would love to Marsters return as Spike in the Buffy reboot, even if it’s to see that bleach-blonde hair again.
