The first episodes from the second and final season of Andor have just dropped on Disney+ and so far, the critics have been raving about it.

The first season of Andor was a huge success and is regarded as one of the best TV series based in the Star Wars universe.

The series serves as a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, centered around the origins of Cassian Andor and the Rebel Alliance. It follows Andor as he progresses from petty thief to a member of the Rebel Alliance.

Season two

In the second season, Diego Luna returns as Cassian Andor, who, a year on from the riot on Ferrix, which concluded season one, has become a crucial member of the rebellion. Meanwhile, the Empire moves towards launching the Death Star.

The action moves on quickly; the 12-episode season is split into chunks of three episodes, which cover a year in the story. All of which brings viewers closer to the events in Rogue One.

Here is all we know about Andor season 2.

Critical praise for Andor season 2

Critics have said that Andor season 2 continues in the same vein and cements its reputation as one of the best series in the Star Wars canon.

For instance, Variety’s Alison Herman said: “Season 1 of Andor was already by far the most exciting output of the venerable franchise’s streaming TV era. With season 2, Andor cements itself as the gold standard of what modern Star Wars can be.”

Clint Gage from IGN said: “Season 2 cements Andor and these characters as a truly entertaining and tragic bit of drama.

“[Showrunner]Tony Gilroy and company manage to weave the dramatic irony inherent in a prequel series into the storytelling itself, making Andor season 2 the most engaging the Star Wars franchise has been in a long time.”

Overall, IGN gives the series a 9 rating.

Empire is similarly fulsome in its praise, giving the show five stars. “Connecting this show with Rogue One is an immense task for Gilroy and his writers, but one they absolutely pull off,” notes Sophie Butcher.

“Beautifully made, cleverly structured and genuinely moving, Andor season 2 solidifies Tony Gilroy’s spin-off as one of the greats. This is Star Wars – and small-0screen storytelling in general – at its best,” Butcher concluded.

Erik Kain at Forbes also believes the series is a “masterpiece.” He adds that the performances of the actors are “riveting throughout” singling out Luna, Stellan Skarsgard (who plays spymaster Luthen Rael) and Denise Gough (Dedra Meero) for particular praise.

“Andor is a perfect Star Wars show and a masterclass in crafting a prequel,” he concludes. “It enriches everything that follows, making not only Rogue One but the original trilogy itself more powerful and meaningful in the process.”

The first three episodes are now available to stream on Disney+, with blocks of three episodes dropping on April 29, May 6 and May 13.
