It’s one of the most heart-wrenching movies of the year.
And fans are going wild for Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield’s performances in We Live In Time.
The film follows the love story between Weetabix representative Tobias (played by Garfield, 41), and Almut, a chef who is played by Pugh, 28.
As they navigate the highs and lows of their decade-long relationship, the couple must tragically deal with Almut’s cancer diagnosis, and the legacy she’ll leave behind for her young daughter Ella (Grace Delaney).
The powerful storytelling from director John Crowley has struck a chord with audiences – and one felt inclined to let Pugh know of the impact the movie had on her.
Writing on Instagram, a 24-year-old fan called Sophie said, “My mom was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer when I was two, given six months to live. She stuck it out through four years of chemo and drugs and treatment to give me a chance at remembering her, and she passed when I was six.
“You and Andrew are two of my favorite actors ever, point blank. I saw lots of promo for the film because I love you both, but wasn’t sure I’d be able to watch due to the direct parallels to my own trauma – I went on my day off on Friday.”
Sophie continued of her experience, “I watched it in a fully empty theater with my mom’s stuffed animal and a box of tissues, and god, I’m so glad I did. It is seriously one of the most beautiful, moving, exceptional movies I’ve ever seen. You captured every emotion my mom felt so beautifully. I only have a couple journal entries left of her, so god, Florence, your performance is such a gift.
“I was so little, so sheltered, I didn’t understand what she was experiencing. Getting to witness it through this film – I just can’t express my gratitude enough. Thank you, thank you all, for bringing my experience to life. I can’t express how much this film means to me. I will be holding it close the rest of my life. So much love.”
The raw comment brought many readers to tears – and Pugh felt compelled to write back.
“Hello Sophie. Florence here. Just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to write your heart here in the comments. It goes without saying that I am incredibly sorry for your loss, especially at such a young age. I can’t imagine the ways that it affects one’s life and the processing that inevitably comes for years after.
“It’s always the wish that my work speaks to someone, somewhere, feeling the same thing. To read just how much it meant to you is not only a privilege to hear, but feels like a gift knowing that it’s helped in some way.”
The Midsommar star continued, “Thank you for sharing your story. I appreciate your time both in watching the movie and in writing me here. To hear that the work we made matters, genuinely gives me the energy needed to tackle these honest stories again and again. So, thank you. Love FP X.”
Pugh and Garfield get carried away…
While Pugh’s exchange warmed the hearts of fans, elsewhere, her co-star Garfield was spilling the beans on a rather, erm, less wholesome inside secret.
While shooting one of the movie’s love scenes, the actor says the duo went a bit further than either of them expected to – and didn’t hear Crowley yell “cut”!
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Garfield revealed, “We do the first take of this very intimate, passionate sex scene. And it’s a closed set, which means it’s only me and Florence in a room together and the camera operator, who is our DP, a very lovely man called Stewart.
“The scene becomes passionate and we choreographed it and we get into it, as it were, and we go a little bit further than we were meant to just because we never heard ‘cut’ and it’s feeling safe and we’re like, ‘OK, we’ll go to the next thing and the next thing, we’ll let this progress.’”
According to the star, this impromptu moment was so steamy that it made the film’s crew members divert their eyes.
“I look up, and in the corner is Stewart and our boom operator,” added Garfield. “Stewart has the camera by his side and he’s turned into the wall!”
