Robert started acting at a young age
Robert first started acting at school, appearing in plays that were put on by his school, including an adaptation of William Golding novel Lord of the Flies.
At age 13, he joined the Barnes Theatre Company, a local amateur theatre group. He started out backstage, but then moved into the cast, first off playing a Cuban dancer who had no lines in Guys and Dolls. But in the next production, Our Town, Robert played the lead role of George Gibbs. In the audience of this performance was a talent agent, who helped Robert to pursue professional acting opportunities.
Robert was expelled from school
Robert initially attended the prestigious Tower House Boys Preparatory School, but was expelled when he was 12 for stealing explicit magazines and then trying to sell them on to his classmates.
His first film role was cut
Robert got his first taste of acting in movies in the 2004 costume drama Vanity Fair, where he played the son of Becky Sharp – who was played by Reece Witherspoon. However, you can only see Robert’s performance on the DVD version of the movie, as his scenes were deleted from the final cut of the movie that played in theaters.
He learnt to scuba dive for Harry Potter
The first role to bring Robert to widespread attention was when he played Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2005. The film’s director, Mike Newell, said Robert was born to play Cedric, given his “chiselled public schoolboy good looks”.
For the role, Robert learned to scuba dive in preparation for the underwater scenes.
Robert beat 3,000 others to his Twilight role
Of course, to many people, Robert will forever be synonymous with the role of Edward Cullen in the romantic fantasy trilogy Twilight.
But getting that role wasn’t easy. As is understandable, there was a lot of hype about the movie adaptation of the hugely successful book series, and some 3,000 men submitted their resumes for the role of Edward. Many of those went on to audition for the role, but it was Robert who came out on top, with director Catherine Hardwicke saying that he had everything needed for the role, including that “mysterious Edward aura.”
He didn’t like the ‘RPattz’ nickname
For some time after his Twilight breakthrough Robert had been called in some media and online ‘RPattz’. However, he didn’t like the nickname and talked in various interviews about his aversion to it. After that, use of the nickname was quietly dropped.
