- Pixar sequel has overtaken movie that held the record for five years
- Inside Out 2 is also moving up the list of all-time biggest grossing movies
- Speculation that there could be a third Inside Out film commissioned

Here’s a statistic that will create joy at Pixar headquarters – Inside Out 2 has just become the biggest grossing animated movie of all time.
Definition of animated
The sequel – easily the biggest-grossing film worldwide this year so far – has just overtaken the 2019 remake of The Lion King to take the crown. Inside Out 2 has now taken more than $1.66 billion at the global box office. There had been confusion over this – some don’t class the CG remake of The Lion King as an animated film.
In overtaking The Lion King, Inside Out 2 also now stands as the ninth biggest movie of all time.
Inside Out 2 takes us back into the mind of Riley, who is now a teenager. If navigating Riley through live wasn’t difficult enough already for her emotions – Joy, Fear, Sadness, Disgust and Anger – things become much more complicated when they are joined by a new range of emotions, including Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui and Envy.
Huge success
This is just another record for Inside Out 2. It had already overtaken Frozen 2 as the biggest animated sequel and The Incredibles 2 as the highest-grossing Pixar film of all time.
The huge success of Inside Out 2 has led to speculation that there could be a third film made. Indeed, some of the voice cast have already had ideas of what a threequel could focus on. However, there has yet to be any confirmation from Disney on whether there will be a third film. But we do know that a spinoff series will be on Disney+ in 2025, which will focus on the team who create Riley’s dreams – they were seen in the first film when Joy and Sadness try to wake her up.
