Kaia Gerber and Austin Butler have called it quits after three years of dating. The model and actor first sparked romance rumors in December 2021 when they attended a yoga class together. At the time, a source told Us Weekly they were “low-key dating,” adding that the relationship was still new. Just weeks later, Butler supported Gerber at a fashion show where she hit the runway.
Though they kept their relationship largely private, their past romances were much more public. Gerber previously dated Australian actor Jacob Elordi from 2020 to 2021, while Butler famously spent eight years with High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens before their 2020 breakup.
When Gerber and Butler first went public, their ten-year age gap raised eyebrows, but the couple defied expectations—until now. So, what caused their split, and how has the internet reacted?
Why have Gerber and Bulter broken up?
The break-up is fresh, but news outlets have broken the story. A source for TMZ reported that the “couple ended their romantic relationship around the end of 2024.” There doesn’t seem to be drama surrounding the breakup. Their relationship appears to have fizzled out after three years. The TMZ source notes there is “no bad blood” between them. No drama here it seems.
Why did people think they’d broken up?
Eagle-eyed fans thought something was wrong on New Year’s. Gerber was spotted with her supermodel mom, Cindy Crawford, and dad Rande Gerber on a family vacation. The family celebrated the New Year in Cabo San Lucas. TMZ also pointed out that on the trip Gerber’s brother Presley bought his girlfriend, but there was no sign of Butler. Ouch. Notably, the two went on the same holiday with Gerber’s family in December 2022.
Typically the couple is public when it comes to supporting each other. They attended the 2022 Met Gala together and walked the carpet. The model supported her boyfriend at the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of Butler’s biopic Elvis in 2022.
These signs pointed to Splitsville, although not in a nasty way.

Some fans speculated about why they broke up, pointing to the possible age difference between them being a factor. Just for reference, Gerber is 23 and Butler is 33. Despite the difference, Gerber and Butler have never commented much on their ages concerning their relationship.

One user on X spoke about their age difference’s possible impact on the relationship ending: “Not surprising. Kia is very young and Austin is quite a bit older. People come in and out of our lives for a reason. It was a great learning experience for her being much younger”.

History with Vanessa Hudgens
More people on X had some harsh words to say about Butler. Regarding the Gerber and Buler age differences, they thought he ‘took youth’ from girls.
They’re referring to Gerber and Hudgens. Butler came under fire from the public when he was dating Hudgens. The two were together for eight years and some thought their breakup stemmed from Butler not wanting to get married. Although this was purely speculative and not the truth reported by the media.
However, the reason for their breakup was, according to PEOPLE, because of scheduling conflicts. Butler was beginning to film Elvis and Hudgens was filming the second Princess Switch movie at the end of 2019.
One user commented: “He wastes years of the youth of every girl he dates ugh”.
Another user referenced Hudgens, declaring that she would be “somewhere laughing while holding her newborn”. The High School Musical star is now happily married, she married basketball player Cole Tucker in 2023 and gave birth to their first child in the summer of 2024. Aww. It wasn’t all criticism for the couple though, as many rejoiced in the Elvis star being single again.
One user posted the question: “So, Austin Butler is single?” with a gif of an excited woman attached. A lot of women everywhere probably agree with that statement. Another user expressed their joy and joked about being free for Butler if he wanted a “shoulder to cry on”, and yes, they did mention every day of the week.

Sincere fans of Butler wished him the best. A fan account for the actor wrote a sweet statement on X: “The news about Austin & Kaia is out. Can’t say I’m sad they are not together, I never thought she was right for him, but if he was happy, then ok. I am glad it ended friemdly. I hope Austin finds someone who loves him, for him, and with their whole heart. Austin, all my love”.
The girlies also had well wishes for Gerber and Austin, but with a bigger focus on Gerber.
Well… they congratulated her on being “free of that man,” about Butler. The person wrote: “Omg Kaia Gerber is free of that man I’m so happy for us both”.
