Khalil Mack doesn’t want to hear about Derrick Henry. The eight-time Pro Bowl linebacker and the rest of the Los Angeles Chargers came up against the Baltimore Ravens running back on Monday night and were promptly handed their fourth loss of the season. But despite the NFL’s 2020 offensive Player of the Year steamrollering through the Chargers defence like me sprinting to McDonald’s when there’s only two minutes until they stop serving breakfast, Mack did not see what the big deal was with the former Tennessee Titan.

Post-game, Mack was asked why playing against Henry was so difficult, but the former Chicago Bear linebacker was not in an enthusiastic mood to reply.

“That’s the thing, man. I don’t think it’s hard to play against that guy and hopefully we see this team again. That’s all. The way I play football I would love to play this team again. I would love to.”

Given that Mack and the Chargers defence were run over for four straight quarters, it feels like quite an unconvincing response to give. Henry rushed for 140 yards on 24 carries (5.8 yards per carry), while the Ravens rushed for 212 yards on the ground, scoring two touchdowns. Henry’s one-man running of the bulls in Pamplona also paved the way for backup Justice Hill to help himself to 55 yards and a touchdown, too.

The victory in Inglewood took the Ravens to 8-4 for the season, leaving them in second place in the AFC North behind the Pittsburgh Steelers, who they host on December 21. The Chargers, meanwhile, find themselves second in the AFC West on 7-4, behind the all conquering, 10-1 Kansas City Chiefs, who they visit on Monday night the week after next.

Alongside the incredible 10-1 Detroit Lions, Baltimore, inspired by Henry and two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, are among the favourites to wrestle the Lombardi Trophy away from Kansas this year.
