One of the most beloved cartoons of the 1990s and 2000s is getting a big-screen makeover – and one like no other the franchise has seen before.

Live-action CGI mix

Rugrats – the show about the adventures of a group of toddlers – is coming back to the big screen, but this time it will be a mix of live-action and CGI animation.

Deadline has reported that Jason Moore will be the director of the as-yet-unnamed film, with a script written by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidel. Karen Rosenfelt is to produce, as are two of the show’s creators, Arlene Klasky and Gabor Csupo.

There is no word yet on when the film might make it to theaters or who will be voicing the toddlers or playing the grown-up characters.

Rugrats made its debut on Nickelodeon in 1991. Each episode followed a group of toddlers, Tommy, Chuckie, twins Phil and Lil and the slightly older Angelica, who got into adventures – sometimes in reality, other times in their imaginations – usually behind the backs of their unwitting relatives. The show was also notable for adding new characters and developing themes over its run, such as Chuckie’s dad remarrying.

The show ran for 9 seasons from 1991 to 2004. It has since spawned a sequel series showing the children at age 10 called All Grown Up! as well as three feature films.

Hugely popular

Rugrats remains popular to this day, as successive generations have discovered repeats of the show on Nickelodeon or, more recently, streaming services. Some probably now watch with their parents who had watched it when they were children too.

Reboots or revivals of classic cartoon series are all the rage currently. One of the biggest shows from the 2010s on Cartoon Network, Regular Show, is being revived, and Mark Hamill recently revealed that he is on board to voice the character of Skips – an immortal Yeti who always skips, rather than walks – again.
