Netflix’s Geeked Week continues to drop some of the biggest teasers of the year, with Black Mirror season seven’s glitchy few seconds already whetting the appetites of viewers, the streaming behemoth have gone ahead and released the first trailer for the second season of Squid Game, during their fan event in Atlanta.
The dystopian South Korean thriller series was a monstrous global hit in 2021, becoming Netflix’s most watched series and most watched programme in 94 countries, attracting viewers from 142 million households and accumulating 1.65 billion viewing hours in its first four weeks of streaming. Squid Games would go onto earn 14 Primetime Emmy nominations.
Now, with the second season set for a festive December 26 release, Netflix have unleashed the teaser trailer for what is guaranteed to be another season of tension and blood filled carnage.
A new game is set to begin in the teaser, with a Korean voice stating “We’re ready to start the game”.
Lee Jung-jae once again stars as Seong Ji-Hun, taking on the iconic green tracksuit and role of Prisoner 456 for a second consecutive game. Also returning for more blood splattered fun and games are Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo. They’re joined by Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri and Won Ji-an.
Following on from December’s second season will be the third and final season of the show in 2025. Squid Game’s executive producer, writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk said of the finale to the show, “Seong Gi-hun, who vowed revenge at the end of season one, returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale in season three, which will be brought to you next year.”
