He said that his version of Luthor will be “imposing and dangerous”. He added: “That’s something about that character. Whenever you’re playing the villain, I suppose you want people to feel that they are dangerous.”

Finding the energy

Hoult also explained how his interpretation of the character came together on set, and how Gunn – who is also helming the entire DCU project – influenced him and pushed him to new places with it.

“It was really fun to create with him because he’s a director who pushed me in exciting ways. I left set each day looking forward to going back, so I really enjoyed the process with James. I was like: “Oh, this is exciting where he imagines this character being, and hopefully I can bring the energy that he wants to what he’s written on the page.”

Hoult also spoke of his admiration for Gunn for writing “such wonderful scripts” and how he has “such a great understanding of storytelling and filmmaking. I just love watching his movies, and I have complete trust in him.”

Impressive cast

Hoult is part of an impressive cast that has been assembled for the Superman movie, which also includes David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. James Gunn’s Superman cast explained here – who is playing the major roles and what they are previously known for.

Superman will land in theaters on July 11, 2025. It is the first instalment in the new DC Universe and will form part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
