While working in normal jobs, he wrote his own screenplays. In 1987 he wrote Love Birds in Bondage alongside Scott Magill. He also attended theatre classes to get better at his craft at the James Best Theatre company. A young Tarantino continued to write, he co-wrote My Best Friend’s Birthday also in 1987.

Tarantino was also an actor from a young age, he had a credit as an Elvis impersonator in an episode of Golden Girls and the money and $3,000 residual check he received from this helped him fund himself while working on Reservoir Dogs. Working hard to build your net worth, we can get behind that!

Rise to fame

After Reservoir Dogs was released, Tarantino’s Hollywood career begun. At the box office, it made $2.9 million. According to some reports, after the film came out, the film offers for Tarantino came rolling in. He was offered to direct Speed (1994), and Men In Black (1997) but instead refused to continue working on the script for Pulp Fiction, which was released two years after Reservoir Dogs in 1994.

Pulp Fiction saw Tarantino as an actor, director and writer. In the film he played Jimmie Dimmick, a supporting character. The film starred Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman.

Pulp Fiction drew Tarantino into award territory, and in 1995 he received the Academy Award For Best Screenplay. He collaborated several times in the 1990s with director Robert Rodriguez. He starred in Rodriguez’s film Desperado in a minor role, and worked with him on writing the 1996 hit From Dusk Till Dawn which Rodriguez directed.

Thurman worked with him on the concept for the movie. His signature violence in his films was memorialized in the Kill Bill movies. Volume 2 was released in 2004 after the film was split into two parts.

He continued to act, direct and write after the Kill Bill success. From 2002-2004, Tarantino starred in Alias as the villain McKenas Cole. He went onto write in Rodriguez’s Sin City and direct other films.

Despite past rumours of retirement, Tarantino confirmed that he would retire only when he did his tenth film. Currently, he has no plans to direct a tenth movie any time soon.

Producing career

Tarantino has had many producing credits on smaller films because of his love of independent films and his status. He formed Rolling Thunder Pictures in 1995 to release many independent films including Chungking Express and Hard Core Logo.
