Fans of intergalactic adventure rejoice – Rick and Morty has been renewed by Adult Swim for and 11th and 12th season, securing the beloved show’s future until the end of the decade.

Years of adventures

The news was revealed at New York Comic Con by Rick and Morty’s executive producers Dan Harmon and Scott Marder.

Season 8 of Rick and Morty will be released in 2025 and seasons nine and 10 had already been locked in. Assuming the team will produce one season per year, this means we will be enjoying new Rick and Morty right up until 2029 – at least.

For the uninitiated, Rick and Morty follows the (mis)adventures of 15-year-old boy Morty Smith and his grandfather, Rick Sanchez, who just happens to be a genius scientist who can travel across the universe. They get involved in various scrapes – often down to Rick’s drinking or attitude – that must be dealt with. Often, Morty’s elder sister, Summer, gets involved, as do their parents.

Celebrating the renewal, Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen said in a statement – via ScreenRant – “from Season One, Rick and Morty set a new standard in adult animation and has shown no signs of stopping. Dan, Scott and the rest of the team behind Rick and Morty are constantly outdoing themselves and I’ll be joining the millions of fans around the world in looking forward to more adventures in the years to come.”

With the future of the show locked in, it means that by the end of season 12 it will be the 11th longest running animated show in US history. It will still be behind some of its Adult Swim stablemates however, such as Archer, American Dad! And Family Guy.

Comeback

While Rick and Morty is very much for adults only, an animated show that everyone can enjoy is coming back to Cartoon Network – Regular Show. A new version of the beloved show is in development, and it is rumored that the title of the show has been revealed by accident.
