• Latino pop-star Ricky Martin leads backlash against Hinchcliffe comments
  • Podcast star criticised after making racist comments at Trump’s New York rally
  • Latin American stars back democratic nominee Kamala Harris

Puerto Rican pop star Ricky Martin has shared a short yet powerful response to comments made by Texan comedian Tony Hinchcliffe during Donald Trump‘s New York City rally.

Taking place on Sunday 27 October, Trump’s Republican rally at Madison Square Garden had been billed as a ‘Homecoming’ by some outlets but the evening was quickly derailed by racist remarks towards Puerto Ricans made by the presidential nominee’s opening act.

Throughout a set peppered with slurs and derogatory comments against Latinos and African Americans, Hinchcliffe took particular aim at the former, comparing the Caribbean archipelago to a “floating island of garbage.”

Peurto Rican stars were quick to comment, with singer-songwriter Martin sharing his thoughts on Instagram.

Writing in Spanish, Martin shared a clip of Hinchcliffe’s remarks with the comment: “This is what they think of us. Vote for @kamalaharris.”

Martin isn’t the only star to make his feelings known.

Fellow Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny also threw his support behind democratic nominee Kamala Harris after Hinchcliffe’s comments made their way online.

Again taking to Instagram, Bad Bunny – whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio – shared the same clip of Harris multiple times onto his Instagram story to his 47.6 million followers.

The Trump campaign has since released a statement saying that “this joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign” but the celebrity backlash has already been pouring in online.

Fellow Latino performers Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have also signalled their support for Harris by sharing the same video posted to Bad Bunny’s Instagram story.

Elsewhere, celebrities such as Two and a Half Men star Jon Cryer, Futurama voice actor John DiMaggio and politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have all replied to a post by Hinchcliffe sharing their anger at his comments.

Who is Tony Hinchcliffe?

Hinchcliffe is an American comedian and the host of the Kill Tony podcast which showcases comics from a range of backgrounds.

In the past, Hinchcliffe has appeared on a number of roast comedy specials, having penned jokes for the roasts of James Franco, Justin Bieber and Rob Lowe.

This isn’t the first time the comedian has found himself in the line of fire. In May 2021, Hinchcliffe was filmed making racist remarks about an Asian American comedian Peng Dang.
