Robocop 1987

A Robocop TV series is moving forward in development at Amazon MGM and now has a writer and showrunner on board.

Developments made

Variety has reported that Peter Ocko has been signed up to write the series, as well as serve as showrunner. Ocko has worked on a range of shows over the years including The Office and Pushing Daisies. He also created Moonhaven.

Ocko will also be an executive producer on the show. James Wan is also set to executive produce too, Variety added.

We also have a synopsis for the series to give us a taste of what the series might look like: A giant tech conglomerate collaborates with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime — a police officer who’s part man, part machine.

Sci-fi classic

The Robocop films were hugely popular in the late 1980s and early 90s. The first film was released in 1987, followed by two sequels, in 1990 and 1993 respectively. It was set in a dystopian near-future Detroit, ridden by crime. Police officer Alex Murphy is violently murdered by a gang but resurrected by a tech company as the titular half-man half-machine law enforcer who struggles with his remaining humanity, as well as fighting crime.

The franchise was rebooted with a new movie in 2014, starring Joel Kinnaman, but that wasn’t well received enough to warrant a follow-up.

Over the years there have also been Robocop TV shows – both live action and animated – as well as numerous comic books and video games.

MGM Amazon is producing the series, which is one of several high-profile series based on famous movies it has in development. Others include Legally Blonde and Poltergeist.
