- Joe and Anthony Russo in preliminary negotiations to direct Avengers 5
- Marvel have had a long search for the director of the fifth Avengers film
- Russo Brothers have directed four MCU films including Avengers: Endgame

The Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony, are reportedly in preliminary talks with Marvel about returning to the MCU to direct the next two films in the Avengers franchise.
Homecoming
Marvel has been searching for a director for the fifth and sixth instalments of the Avengers franchise for months, with several high-profile names considered. One of the names reportedly in the frame was Shawn Levy, who has directed the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine film.
If – and it is a big if currently, as talks are said to be at an early stage – the Russo brothers return to Marvel, it will be homecoming of sorts. The pair have previously directed four films in the MCU, beginning with 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, followed by Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). The latter remains the second biggest grossing film of all time, taking $2.79 million at the global box office.
Troubled gestation
The fifth Avengers movie has had a troubled gestation in addition to the search for a director. It was originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty but Marvel cut ties with Jonathan Majors, who played Kang after he was convicted of assault and harassment last December. Now, the film is expected to have a new focus and villain.
While it seems like Levy might be out of contention for the Avengers films, he will be busy for a while on Stranger Things season 5. After, that, he is keeping his cards close to his chest, as he recently told Pubity on the red carpet at the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere.
