Sabrina Carpenter is one of the music industry’s biggest stars.

But last week, the pint-sized pop star, 25, came under attack from industry critics who see her songs, outfits and dance routines as being too risqué.

As music mogul Pete Waterman, 78, branded Carpenter “offensive”, she has now hit back at his harsh words.

“My message has always been clear – if you can’t handle a girl who is confident in her own sexuality, then don’t come to my shows,” she told The Sun

Adding that women being judged on their appearance “isn’t something new”, Carpenter went on, “Female artists have been shamed forever. In the Noughties it was Rihanna, in the Nineties it was Britney Spears, in the Eighties it was Madonna – and now it’s me.

“It’s essentially saying that female performers should not be able to embrace their sexuality in their lyrics, in the way we dress, in the way we perform.

“It is totally regressive. It’s like those who want to shame don’t make comments when I talk about self-care or body positivity or heartbreak, which are all normal things a 25-year-old goes through. They just want to talk about the sexual side of my performances.”

‘We need to be kind to each other’

In the interview, Carpenter also spoke about how she has the confidence she has to wear her amazing stage costumes.

“As women, we can look at another woman and be like, ‘Oh, she has the perfect body’,” she said. “But if you were to ask the woman you think has a perfect body, I guarantee she will have her own insecurities.

“That’s why as women we need to be kind to each other.”

And while it may be difficult to be in the public eye as she navigates the reported split from her partner of just over a year, Barry Keoghan, Carpenter remained tight-lipped about the details surrounding their break up.

“I share a lot of myself through my lyrics and my performances, but there will always be things that stay private,” she explained.

Sabrina Carpenter to ‘try out British accent’

Despite the negative comments from the industry dinosaurs *cough* professionals, Carpenter’s looks and lyrics have clearly not impacted on her ability to win fans from across the globe.

Up for a whopping six Grammy awards, as well as two Brit awards over in Blighty, Carpenter is also set to begin the European leg of her Short n’ Sweet tour on March 3.

The Espresso singer, who grew up in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, told the outlet that she cannot wait to perform for her British fans at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham on March 6.

“I am so excited,” she admitted. “I have been perfecting my British accent – so you never know, I might try it out during one of my intros.”
