- SNL star Sarah Sherman responded to backlash over an impression she did
- Sherman impersonated The White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood’s character, Chelsea
- Wood expressed upset at the sketch, and Sherman has said it did not have ill intent

Sarah Sherman, the SNL star who did an impersonation of a character from The White Lotus in April, is speaking out. Sherman, 32, did a sketch where she played a parody version of Aimee Lou Wood‘s character from The White Lotus season 3, Chelsea.
Silverman joined the sketch comedy show in 2021.
In the sketch titled The White Potus, members of the Trump administration acted as stand-ins for the show’s characters. However, Sherman caused the upset by wearing enlarged fake teeth to portray Chelsea.
The sketch was not received well by Wood, 31, who expressed upset over it on Instagram. However, Wood went on to defend Sherman. In an Instagram Story after calling the sketch “mean and unfunny,” Wood clarified her comments.

“Actually, one last thing,” she wrote. “Not @sarahsquirm’s fault. Not hating on her, hating on the concept.”
But what did Silverman say about the sketch, one month on?
What did SNL star Sarah Silverman say?

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Silverman said the sketch was not made to hurt Wood.
“I was excited to play her because she’s so iconic, her character is so iconic,” she told the publication. “I f****** obviously never meant to hurt anyone’s feelings. Never in a million years did I get into comedy to make anyone upset. I feel terrible that anyone would feel bad.”
In the White POTUS sketch, many of Trump’s administration were made fun of. Jon Hamm, who played a version of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was dressed to look like Walton Goggins’ White Lotus character Rick. In the sketch, he says, “I’ve been having these insane ideas, like what if we took all the fluoride out of the drinking water? What would that do to people’s teeth?”
The camera then cuts to the SNL star playing Chelsea, who exclaims, “Fluoride? What’s that?”
The overexaggeration of Wood’s teeth in the sketch made people think they were making fun of her looks. Wood has spoken about people commenting on her teeth before, as they are prominent.
At the time, Lou Wood said of the sketch, “Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple of weeks ago,” she wrote on Instagram. “Yes, take the piss for sure – that’s what the show is about- but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?”
Behind the scenes, Silverman sent Woods flowers to apologize, and SNL also apologized to the star.
All is fair in love and SNL comedy.
