The search is on for an actor to play a young Snoop Dogg in an upcoming biopic, and the legendary rapper is looking for a certain quality in the hopefuls.

Embody the spirit

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the rapper, TV star and entrepreneur, plus actor, said he was looking for someone “who can embody the spirit when I was that young, rough around the edges – trying to discover who I was, and that to me is going to be a phenomenal actor.”

The Snoop Dogg biopic was first announced in 2022, with Universal Pictures developing it. Allen Hughes, who has directed films such as Menace II Society, is on board to direct. Joe Robert Cole, who has written scripts for films including Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is penning the script.

The movie will also include music from his back catalogue. Snoop acquired his former record label, Death Row Records, back in 2022. This was the label that released his debut album, Doggystyle, which catapulted him to international fame in 1993.

Working hard

Snoop added that he is working hard currently, splitting his time between searching for an actor to play him and his role as a coach on season 26 of The Voice.

This continues his busy 2024. In the summer, he was at the Olympic Games in Paris, where he did some reporting, as well as taking a role in the Closing Ceremony as the baton was handed to Los Angeles. Snoop also opened a shop selling weed near to Los Angeles Airport named ‘S.W.E.D’ – a reference to Snoop’s catchphrase ‘smoke weed every day’.

S.W.E.D. sells a range of regulated cannabis products, but visitors to the shop can experience much more. For instance, there is an area dedicated to Snoop’s breakthrough album Doggystyle from 1993, a hand-written graffiti wall and a DJ booth.
