Sadie Sink has joined Spider-Man 4 and fans are convinced they know exactly who she’s playing – regardless of what she says – largely thanks to Andrew Garfield.

Best known for playing Max Mayfield in Stranger Things, Sink was confirmed to star alongside Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man in a new movie set to hit screens in 2026.

The news was made official by Deadline in early March. It didn’t take long for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to start predicting which character she could be playing.

Much of the rumor mill focused in on her red hair. This led many people to believe she could be playing one of two characters: Peter Parker’s girlfriend Mary Jane Watson or psychic X Men heroine Jean Grey.

Who is Sadie Sink playing in Spider-Man 4?

Both seem equally possible. Despite Spider-Man’s current timeline already featuring an MJ Watson played by Holland’s real-life partner Zendaya, its multiverse-meddling could mean any number of Mary Janes could exist in the MCU.

Equally, we know also know that Marvel has regained access to its iconic X-Men and is in the process of weaving them into future storylines. While their presence has been mentioned, they’re yet to be properly welcomed into this world.

Perhaps this could come via Jean Grey in Spider-Man 4?

Not if Sink has anything to say about it. The star recently played dumb to these quickly spreading rumors. Sadly, the era of stars denying role rumors has ended – and we have Andrew Garfield to thank for that.

What has Sadie Sink said about playing Jean Grey?

Shortly after the news that Sink would join Spider-man 4 dropped the star embarked on a promotional tour for her latest film O’Dessa.

As part of her press rounds, she appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast where host Josh Horowitz quizzed her about the recent Jean Grey rumors.

“I’m sure people have been asking you about this,” probed Horowitz, broaching the question towards the end of their chat.

“Yes,” Sink replied bashfully. “I mean this is news to me,” she laughed.

Horowitz probed further, asking whether she’d spoken to Marvel boss Kevin Feige about the character.

“No, I have nothing to say about this,” she said, stopping the questioning in its tracks. “The rumors are really cool though. It’s an awesome rumour.”

She added that she knows the character, saying “It’s a great character so it’s cool to read.”

Why did Andrew Garfield change the game?

Sadly, no matter how much Sink tries to convince us that she’s not playing Jean Grey in Spider-Man 4, fans will have a hard time believing her thanks to Garfield’s ongoing insistence that he wasn’t appearing Spider Man: No Way Home.

On multiple occasions, the We Live In Time actor – who played Peter Parker in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel – assured us he had no idea about online chatter suggesting he would be joining Holland’s MCU.

In fact, he denied it so much that fans made a super-cut showcasing all of his press-round lies. Check it out below:

Despite this, Andrew did end up appearing alongside Holland and original Spider-Man Tobey Maguire in director Jon Watts 2021 film. While he’s assured us he won’t be appearing in Spider-Man 4, fans naturally no longer believe a word he says – and Garfield knows this.

“I’m gonna disappoint you,” he told GQ (via Variety). “Yeah, no. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.”

With that, the game had forever changed and as a result, fans now know that it’s all-too-likely could actually end up playing Jean Grey in Spider-Man 4 – despite what she says.

So while she’ll certainly have to make plenty of denials in the near future, she has Garfield to thank for fans insistence in asking the question.
