While it was unsuccessful, all remaining bots were sent to live in a restricted zone know as the Electric State. It’s here where our heroes – played by Brown and Pratt – must venture on a nail-biting journey.

What is plot of The Electric State?

Based on a script by Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, The Electric State is set in an alternate reality version of the 1990s where sentient robots exist alongside humans after their uprising failed.

It’s in this world where orphaned teenager Michelle must team up with plucky smuggler Keats and his wisecracking robot sidekick to brave a place known as the ‘Exclusion Zone’ which is controlled entirely by robots. Their quest? To find Michelle’s brother Christopher.

“As they venture into the Exclusion Zone, a walled-off corner in the desert where robots now exist on their own, Keats and Michelle find a strange, colourful group of new animatronic allies — and begin to learn that the forces behind Christopher’s disappearance are more sinister than they ever expected,” explains the film’s official synopsis.

Speaking about how The Electric State differed from their work on Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the Russos revealed that this one contains the most amount of visual effects they’ve ever worked on.

“I don’t know if I’d point out one single shot, but I will say this: we’ve worked with visual effects a lot in our movies. This has been the most amount of visual effects we’ve ever dealt with in a film,” Anthony told Collider.

“That was challenging itself in terms of creating that. Also, we were trying to do a very grounded real world that has a period feel to it, so we had to have a high level of fidelity in the visual effect work to create recognizable realism so that people would understand it as period.”

Who is in the cast?

Brown plays Michelle, with Pratt joining her as the sly smuggler Keats. Together, the duo are joined by an ensemble cast, some of whom appear in person, while others lend their voices to the film’s various ‘bots.

Oscar-winning Everything Everything All At Once star Ke Huy Quan plays Dr. Amherst, The Hunger Games’ Stanley Tucci is Ethan Skate and Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito will play a character named Colonel Marshall Bradbury.

Meanwhile, folks like Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Anthony Mackie, Billy Bob Thornton, Jason Alexander, Woody Harrelson and Alan Tudyk will voice various members of the film’s colourful machine cast.
