- Ciri’s immense powers, fueled by Elder Blood and witcher mutations, raise concerns about gameplay balance
- CD Projekt Red is reimagining Ciri’s abilities, suggesting a reduction or reset to ensure her journey feels grounded
- The cinematic trailer hinting at her reliance on traditional witcher techniques

The Witcher 4 fans community is buzzing with an intriguing question: Is Ciri simply too powerful to be the star of the next trilogy?
Ciri’s Power and Concern Over Gameplay Balance
A week after CD Projekt Red unveiled the cinematic reveal trailer for The Witcher 4 at The Game Awards, fans and critics alike are still buzzing. With Ciri confirmed as the protagonist, excitement is at an all-time high, but not everyone holds the same opinion.
To understand these concerns, let’s look at what makes Ciri so extraordinary. As a descendant of Lara Dorren, she carries the Elder Blood, giving her access to elder magic—a force that allows control over space and time.
In The Witcher 3, we saw glimpses of her immense power, and it left many wondering how her abilities could fit into a balanced gameplay experience. Add to that her new status as a full-fledged witcher, and the scale tips even further.
The recent trailer revealed Ciri’s journey during which she undergoes the Trial of the Grasses, a grueling process where potential witchers are subjected to mutagens and viruses to enhance their physical abilities.
Those who manage to survive attain ultimate powers, reflexes, and other abilities that make them entirely formidable. In a nutshell, Ciri possesses the elder magic and has gained witcher enhancement making it valid to question her collective power as players are worried that it may disrupt the gameplay balance.
CDPR’s Strategic Approach for The Witcher 4
However, CDPR seems to have anticipated this. Speaking with GamesRadar+, executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga addressed these concerns head-on.
“The gap between her being totally overpowered at the end of the previous game and now, with the skill set we showed off in the trailer… something totally happened in-between,” We had to delve deep to consider how we would address this – we have huge respect for the lore, for both the books and for what made it into our previous games. But this was one of the first questions we found the answer for, and it’s how we were able to create this original story which starts with The Witcher 4.”
Mitręga explained. Without diving into spoilers, she hinted that major changes to Ciri’s abilities would serve as a foundation for The Witcher 4’s story. This potential reset is already evident in the trailer.
In one scene, Ciri defeats a Bauk—a type of monster—using traditional witcher techniques rather than relying on magic. This suggests her elder magic may be limited or even inaccessible, possibly due to the effects of the Trials.
By rebalancing her abilities, CDPR ensures that Ciri’s journey remains challenging, relatable, and true to the series’ core values of growth and struggle.
The shift in focus also opens new storytelling opportunities. Unlike Geralt, who was a seasoned witcher when players first met him, Ciri is still finding her way and during the breakdown of the cinematic trailer it was mentioned that Ciri goes through the process of transformation in terms of becoming a witcher.
CDPR’s approach to handling Ciri’s powers demonstrates their commitment to honoring the series’ lore while crafting a fresh, engaging experience for fans. By addressing concerns early and thoughtfully integrating them into the narrative, they’ve set the stage for a thrilling new chapter in The Witcher saga.
