The BAFTAs, or the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, celebrate achievements in both British and international films. Each year, the event features a long list of categories, nominations, and even a few surprise winners.
At the 2024 BAFTAs, the drama wasn’t just on-screen.
What happened at the 2024 BAFTAs?
Reactions were ecstatic as Cillian Murphy won his first BAFTA for Best Actor for his performance in Oppenheimer.
As expected, Oppenheimer also took home Best Film, with Murphy, director Christopher Nolan, Charles Rovan, and Emma Thomas accepting the award.

There was also outrage over the surprise winners, surprise over the tears, and anger over the snubs. Despite making $1.4 billion at the Box office, Barbie was snubbed from any awards. As was Leonardo DiCaprio’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
Barbie’s snub was a shock, considering the film’s strong messaging and five BAFTA nominations.

The snub drama didn’t end there. Subsequently, the BAFTAs faced major backlash for not including Matthew Perry in the In Memoriam section.
Perry, who died suddenly in October 2023, was beloved for his role as Chandler Bing in the sitcom Friends. In response to the backlash, BAFTA honored Perry at the BAFTA TV Awards instead.
Interestingly, away from the sadness, a strange social media moment unfolded during the Oppenheimer cast and crew’s ‘Best Film’ acceptance speech. Unexpectedly, YouTuber Lizwani gatecrashed the stage and went unnoticed for a while before being removed by BAFTA security.
With more drama to come, here’s everything you need to know ahead of the 2025 BAFTAs.
When are the 2025 BAFTAs happening?
The 78th annual BAFTAs will take place on Sunday, 26th February 2025, at The Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. Similarly, the location remains the same as last year.
What channel are the BAFTAs on?
You can watch the 2025 BAFTAs on BBC One in the UK at 7 pm BST. Additionally, it will be streamed on BBC iPlayer.
For those eager to see the red carpet action, check out the live stream on YouTube. Finally, for viewers in the USA and Canada, tune in on the streaming platform BritBox.
In fact, the partnership with BritBox and BAFTAs will continue for years to come, because earlier this year the award show struck up a deal with Britbox to stream the BAFTAs internationally.
Who is hosting the show?
Woohoo last year’s host David Tennant is returning to host this year’s BAFTAs. Take a breath ladies.
Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA, said of Tennant’s return: “We couldn’t be happier that David Tennant is returning to host the EE BAFTA Film Awards in 2025. He is an absolute pleasure to work with, and his performance this year was simply outstanding – warm, witty, whip-smart, and with a delightful touch of mischief.”
No doubt, Tennant has had a big year. Recently he had a leading role in the TV adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s book Rivals. In the show, he plays the CEO of independent TV network Corinium, Tony Baddingham. Now he’s back on hosting gigs.
Who is leading the nominations?
As of now, the nominations for the 2025 BAFTAs have not been released. However, the longlist will be unveiled on January 3. From there, voting will narrow down the contenders, and the official nominations will follow on January 15.
At the 2024 BAFTAs, Oppenheimer led the pack with 13 nominations. Meanwhile, Poor Things earned 11 nominations, followed by Killers of the Flower Moon with nine.
Are there any major changes at the 2025 BAFTAs?
Yes, there are a few changes. This year marks the beginning of a new BAFTA category, The Best Children’s and Family Film. This change comes from the want to “celebrate the very best films appealing to inter-generational audiences,” according to the BAFTAs.
To start with, the Outstanding British Film category will introduce a new points system to judge a film’s eligibility. Specifically, it will consider factors such as the nationality of the cast and key department heads, among other criteria.
Meanwhile, everything else at the BAFTAs remains largely unchanged. In conclusion, make sure you stay connected with us for updates on the 2025 BAFTAs.
