The new Superman trailer has landed on Earth and left many fans with the same lingering question: Who is The Hammer of Boravia?

This metal-headed newbie appears briefly in our latest look at director James Gunn’s new Man of Steel movie. However, while his trailer screen time may be brief, his impact on audiences has been considerable.

Throughout Gunn’s second Supes tease, we see Clark Kent’s red and blue alter ego go up against this new foe in a mid-air fight. Beforehand, we see the same character – who appears to be wearing a suit of solid metal armour – blast a building with a laser beam.

Next, we see the same amped-up character blast into Superman and send him flying across the screen. Whoever he is, he appears to be giving Krypton’s Last Son a run for his money.

By all accounts, The Hammer of Boravia appears to be a new character created specifically for Gunn’s new take on this iconic DC hero. This is somewhat unusual, especially considering the wealth of canon characters available at the director’s disposal.

We already know that Superman won’t be the only well-known hero or villain featured in Gunn’s film. He’ll be joining a world that’s already pre-populated with costumed goodies and baddies.

Nathan Fillion’s smug Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl and Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific are just some of the names that have already been confirmed.

Despite this, The Hammer of Boravia seems to be have plucked from Gunn’s own creative mind.

Fans noticed the character a few months back in a piece of promotional material linked to the movie. A Daily Planet newspaper headline appears to call the character a “superpowered mystery man” and chronicles his chaos in Metropolis.

Perhaps the action glimpses in the new Superman trailer is the trouble this headline is referring to?

How does the character fit into the plot?

While we can’t be 100% sure how The Hammer of Boravia fits into the overall plot of Gunn’s movie, it is believed that he’s a key figure involved with the war that’s mentioned in the new trailer.

During Lois Lane’s (Rachel Brosnahan) grilling of Superman during an intense interview, the Daily Planet reporter puts pressure on our hero’s decision to involve himself in a world-wide conflict.

Outlets have since discovered that Boravia is one of these warring nations, with Jarhanpur being the other. The Hammer of Boravia is believed to represent its namesake country so perhaps it find itself in Metropolis to settle a score with Superman for interfering with their ongoing war?

While it sounds plausible, we won’t know for sure exactly how this heavily armoured advisory fits into Gunn’s story until Superman hits screens in July.
