A video of Selena Gomez crying as she spoke about the deportations of Mexicans has been circulating on social media.

Gomez posted an emotional video about the Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids that occurred over the weekend. Thanks to Donald Trump’s stringent new immigration policy, 956 people were arrested across major cities in the US in just three days.

“I just want to say that I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked,” said the tearful Gomez on her Instagram story. “The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry I wish I could do something but I can’t.”

“I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”

She deleted the story shortly afterwards.

What did Trump’s supporters say?

Following the video, Trump supporters lashed out at Gomez, particularly since her family came to the US from Mexico illegally.

Gomez wrote about her family’s plight in an essay for Time and also helmed a documentary about it, Living Undocumented. Her aunt and paternal grandparents lived undocumented for some time but in her essay, she wrote that they “worked hard to gain United States citizenship.”

US Senate candidate Sam Parker was among those attacking Gomez, saying she should be deported.

“Selena Gomez picked illegals over America b/c she’s the 3rd gen descendent of Mexican illegals who received citizenship in the ‘87 Amnesty,” he wrote.

“She has an entitlement attitude toward America, like her illegal g’parents. Maybe Selena should be deported, too?”

In response, Gomez wrote: “Oh Mr Parker, Mr Parker. Thanks for the laugh and the threat.”

He then said: “Selena Gomez has responded to me. American Nationalism is back. With a little boost from Selena Gomez.”

One of the most notable involved revoking birthright citizenship, which is protected by the 14th Amendment. In total, 22 states and activist groups have filed legal challenges.

What else has Selena Gomez been up to?

However, the film has proved controversial over how it represents Mexico, particularly their missing person epidemic amid the drug wars.

Many groups advocating for LGBT rights have also spoken out against the film. GLAAD described its handling of transgender issues and the topic of transitioning as “retrograde”.
