Will Smith has a reputation on set for being a joker, but he will also be known as a farter too, thanks to an anecdote from one of the directors of his films.

Foul stench

Barry Sonnenfeld has revealed an incident that happened on the set of the classic 1997 film Men In Black, where Smith farted so badly it led to the set being cleared for three hours until the foul stench had gone.

Speaking on Kelly Ripa’s SiriusXM podcast, Let’s Talk Off Camera, Sonnenfeld let slip the story as he was promoting his new book, ‘Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time’.

He said that Smith and co-star Tommy Lee Jones had been locked into a tight space to film a scene where a car transforms into a hypercar. However, just before the director was set to call ‘action!’ Smith let one rip.

Sonnenfeld said he heard Smith say ‘Oh, Jesus, so sorry. Tommy, so sorry. Baz, get the ladder.” The director fetched the ladder and put it in place, whereupon Jones raced down them to escape the smell.

The smell then continued to make its way across the set and became so overpowering, the stage had to be “evacuated” for three hours, Sonnefeld added.

“Will Smith is a farter,” Sonnenfeld said. “it’s just some people are, and you really don’t want to be inside a very small hermetically sealed space with a Will Smith fart! You don’t even want to be sitting next to him at the Disney ranch,” he joked, adding: “He’s a lovely guy, he just farts.”

New film discussed

This story might cause a few people to be wary next time they are on set with Smith. Or in an enclosed space. One upcoming project for Smith could be a fifth film in the Bad Boys franchise. The fourth film, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, was a hit when it was released earlier this year and a fifth film has already been discussed, according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
