Windows Update
  • Windows Update 24H2 causes Intel compatibility issues with Easy Anti-Cheat and causes some videogames to crash.
  • Microsoft is no longer offering devices with Easy Anti-Cheat and Asphalt 8 the update until all issues are fixed.

Windows 11 Version 24H2 delivered promising features, including Wi-Fi 7 support, upgraded Bluetooth audio, an enhanced File Explorer, and more. Unfortunately, it was released prematurely and has issues ranging from compatibility issues to videogame crashes.

What Are The Issues?

Fans of the high-octane racing game Asphalt 8 should hold off on updating Windows. Version 24H2 makes the game unplayable for some systems. On 24H2, Asphalt 8 either crashes at startup or occasionally during gameplay.

The bulk of the issues are faced by users with Intel configurations. Those with Intel’s 12th Gen Alder Lake CPUs or newer must deal with compatibility issues with the Easy Anti-Cheat platform.

Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) is a popular kernel-level security platform that ensures online play is free of cheating and hackers. It’s not a fool-proof solution, but it gets the job done most of the time. Videogames like Call of Duty, Rocket League, Warframe, Destiny, and more rely on Easy Anti-Cheat for a smooth experience.

Unfortunately, Intel configurations seem to encounter compatibility issues with EAC, which can cause disruptions in online play and startup crashes. In some cases, loading up a game with EAC can also result in the computer freezing up and needing a restart.

These issues are not exclusive to Intel’s leading CPU lineup—users with PCs fitted with Intel’s vPro platform have similar problems. However, the vPro platform is designed more for business applications and less for gaming.

How is Microsoft Responding?

Fortunately, Microsoft caught these issues fairly early and released recommended guidelines alongside a few fixes. For Intel devices, Microsoft recommends updating to the latest versions of the affected video games. They hope newer versions also house an updated version of Easy Anti-Cheat, one devoid of issues.

Microsoft has also postponed the update on all devices with recognizable apps that use Easy Anti-Cheat installed. These devices will not be offered the update until all issues are fixed. PCs with Asphalt 8 installed also cannot update to 24H2 through the regular way via Windows Update.

Microsoft is working to roll out a system-wide update that fixes all compatibility issues and crashes. Update 24H2 did gamers no favors and only added to the narrative that Windows 11 is inefficient for gaming.
