It is now less than a year until Zootopia 2 – the sequel to 2016’s hit film – hits theaters screens. He is what we know about the film.
The original Zootopia film was a success back in 2016 for Disney. It told the story of the optimistic but driven rabbit Judy Hopps, who becomes the first rabbit to join the Zootopia Police Department. While trying to find her feet, she meets petty criminal Nick Wilde – but they both get embroiled in a much larger and more sinister crime that threatens the whole of Zootopia, unless they can crack it.
Zootopia 2 has had a long gestation. Directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore first talked about a sequel in 2016, but it wasn’t until February 2023 that Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the sequel as actively being developed. Jared Bush then confirmed he was writing the script for it. Bush was also going to be the sole director, but since taking over as Disney’s chief creative officer, Howard has returned to be co-director.
Who has been cast in Zootopia 2
So far, only headline cast members have been announced for Zootopia 2. Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman are both reprising their roles as Hopps and Wilde respectively.
Shakira is also returning as Gazelle, who is a famous pop star in Zootopia. In November 2024, Shakira said that she is writing a new song for Gazelle for Zootopia 2.
Meanwhile, Ke Huy Quan is joining the cast as Gary the snake. Quan will also be appearing in the upcoming movie The Electric State. Fortune Feimster has also signed on and will voice Nibbles, a beaver who lives in Marsh Market.
It hasn’t been confirmed if stars in the first film, such as Idris Elba, who played police chief Bogo, or Nate Torrance, who voiced Benjamin Clawhauser, the desk sargeant at the Zootopia Police Department 1st Precinct, will be returning.
What is the plot
So far, only snippets of the plot have been released. But we do know that takes place after the events of Zootopia. In the second movie, Hopps and Wilde, now partners in the Zootopia Police Department, are sent undercover in Marsh Market, where they are on the trail of a mysterious snake, called Gary.
Is Zootopia 2 also known by a different name?
While the film is titled Zootopia 2 in the US, in certain other territories it goes by another name, due to trademark issues. In regions including the UK, Ireland, Spain and Italy it is known as Zootropolis 2, while in Germany it is called Zoomania 2.

Zootopia 2 will be in theaters in the US on November 26, 2025.
