The 2025 Oscars are nearly here, with musical drama Emilia Pérez, Wicked and The Brutalist leading the nominations.
The full list of shortlisted films for each category was revealed on Thursday 23 January. Director Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez broke records by becoming the most nominated non-English language film in the Academy’s history.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ annual celebration of movies marks the end of the awards season. They are the most prestigious and the most sought-after trophy in the biz.
Elsewhere, James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and religious thriller Conclave each received six nods each.
Last year, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was the big winner of the night. Other highly favoured titles included The Killers of The Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest.

When are the 2025 Oscars happening?
The 97th Academy Awards are scheduled for Sunday, 2 March at 4 pm Pacific Standard Time and 7 pm Eastern Standard Time.
The ceremony will air live on ABC.

When will the 2025 Oscars nominations be announced?

The 2025 Oscar nominations were revealed on Thursday 23 January 2025. Spanish language musical drama Emilia Pérez led the way with 13 nominations.
The film earned a Best Picture nomination, alongside recognition for its star Karla Sofía Gascón who became the first Trans actor to be nominated in this category.
Brady Corbet’s three-and-a-half-hour-long historical drama The Brutalist received 10 nominations. Musical comedy Wicked received the same number of nods.

Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were nominated in Best Actress and Best Supporting actress respectively. Hollywood legend Demi Moore was also nominated for the former for her role in The Substance.
Keiran Culkin led the Best Supporting Actor category for A Real Pain alongside his Succession co-star Jeremy Strong for his role in Donald Trump movie The Apprentice.

Nominations were originally set to be revealed on 17 January. However, the deadly California wildfires caused the Academy to push it back two days.
Comedians Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott revealed which actors made the cut this season during a live event that took place at 8:30 AM ET / 5:30 AM PT.

The annual luncheon, due to happen on 10 February and kick off the final vote, has been cancelled.
Voting is still supposed to close on 18 February.
Where are the 2025 Oscars?
As per usual, the venue is set for Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre in sunny Los Angeles.
Who is hosting?
Conan O’Brien will be the evening’s MC after two years on the trot of Jimmy Kimmel.

The selection was made public on 15 November with a hilarious clip of the late-night icon.
“We are thrilled and honoured to have the incomparable Conan O’Brien host the Oscars this year,” the CEO of the Academy, Bill Kramer and its president, Janet Yang, said in a joint statement.
“He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of film with his brilliant humour, his love of movies, and his live TV expertise. His remarkable ability to connect with audiences will bring viewers together to do what the Oscars do best–honour the spectacular films and filmmakers of this year.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Mulaney turned down the offer to host the show.
Who is presenting?
The Academy unveiled that last year’s acting winners will be back. This means Robert Downey Jr, Cillian Murphy, Emma Stone, and Da’Vine Randolph will join a string of stars to give out the awards.
Announced names include Halle Berry, Penélope Cruz, Elle Fanning, and Whoopi Goldberg to name a few.
On 19 February more stars were added with Selena Gomez, Oprah Winfrey, Ben Stiller, and Sterling K. Brown joining the lineup. Also announced to present are Willem Dafoe, Ana de Armas, Lily-Rose Depp, Goldie Hawn, Connie Nielsen, and Joe Alwyn.

Who is performing at the 2025 Oscars?
The academy revealed that it will change tact this year and not include any live musical performances. These are usually reserved for those nominated in the Best Original Song category.

Instead, they will focus on each nominee via video packages that offer insider insight and behind-the-scenes information on how each track was made.
It was also revealed that the ceremony itself will pay tribute to the brave fire fighters who battled blazes across Los Angeles.
