Emilia Perez is one of this year’s strongest awards contenders.

It’s already taken home four Golden Globes, including one for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy. With the 2025 Oscars looming, there’s a strong chance that its winning streak could continue.

Before its Globes wins, it was heralded as the ceremony’s second most nominated film ever.

With so many accolades under its belt before 2025 awards season has really had a chance to get going, many have been left wondering where they can watch the movie for themselves.

Here’s what you need to know.

Where can I watch Emilia Perez?

Netflix won exclusive rights to distribute the film in North America and the United Kingdom in a $8 million deal. It has been streaming since 13 November. Before this, it had a limited run in theatres in the US and Canada last month. 

In France, where it originates, it was released in cinemas in August.

What is the plot?

Without giving away any spoilers, Emilia Perez tells the story of a Mexican lawyer, Rita Mora Castro. She is tasked with the job of helping an infamous cartel boss named Juan ‘Little Hands’ Del Monte retire and live her life as a transgender woman named Emilia Perez.  

Who stars in Emilia Perez?

The cast includes some famous faces such as Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez. Saldana plays lawyer Rita, while Gomez plays Jessie Del Monte, Juan’s wife. 

Karla Sofia Gascon plays the titular character. Other on-screen talent includes Adriana Paz and Mark Ivanir. 

Who directed Emilia Perez?

The movie was helmed by Jacques Audiard, who also wrote the screenplay.

What other awards has it won?

Emilia Perez was already selected to compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. It didn’t win but did take home the Jury Prize. 

It was already ranked among the top 10 films of 2024 by the American Film Institute and the best French film for entry at the 97th Academy Awards.

Has there been any controversy around the film?

Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez dubbed Gomez’s attempt at speaking Spanish as “indefensible”. The Only Murders In the Building star, who has Mexican heritage, plays an American who speaks Spanish.

He continued, “Every time she had a scene, we looked at each other to say to each other, “Wow, what is this?'”

Like she usually does, Selena clapped back at the criticism and stood up for herself and her oral skills.

“I understand where you are coming from..I’m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given. Doesn’t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie,” she responded via TikTok comment.
