Now that we’ve passed the Christmas period (almost), we are reaching award show season. By February comes Valentine’s Day and the month of the BAFTAs. Each year, the BAFTAs celebrate the best in British film, television, and games although it does include foreign media. In February it will be the best work in film celebrated at the 2025 BAFTAs. A returning host will front the ceremony, which takes place at The Royal Festival Hall.

Last year, (by then we mean the 2023 BAFTAs) were hosted by the iconic British presenter Alison Hammond and English and Swaziland-born English legend, actor Richard E. Grant.

Without a doubt, our hosts were great, because Grant and Hammond were praised by viewers. One user on X described them as “the dream team” and another said before the show that Grant and Hammond are “the most bizarre pairing, but possibly the best,” and we couldn’t have said it any better.

Now we eagerly hope to have another great show, especially as a previous host is returning. So, to find out who, keep reading!

Actor and British icon David Tennant will host the 2025 BAFTAs, bringing his charm back to the prestigious event. Earlier this year, Tennant captivated audiences as the host of the 77th BAFTA Film Awards, earning such praise that he was invited to return. Previously on hosting the 2024 BAFTAs, he said: “I am delighted to host the EE BAFTA Film Awards and celebrate the very best of this year’s films and the many brilliant people who bring them to life.”

BAFTA announced David Tennant’s return as a host on December 9. His hosting in 2024 was a hit, drawing over 3.8 million viewers in the UK and 20 million worldwide. It’s clear why he’s back. Tennant is widely known for his successful acting career, starring in UK hits like Rivals and Doctor Who and international roles like Kilgrave in Netflix’s Jessica Jones and Crowley in Good Omens.

Does Tennant have hosting experience?

That’s like asking if a cat likes milk—it’s obvious. David Tennant, who notably hosted the 2024 BAFTAs, has plenty of experience as a host. The 53-year-old has taken on several presenting roles, including co-hosting the UK charity event Red Nose Day in 2009 and 2019. Looking ahead to 2025, Tennant is set to host ITV’s new game show Genius Game. This show pits geniuses against each other in IQ-based challenges, letting their smarts take center stage in a battle of brains. Maybe we’ll nerd out to get on the show then?

What did he say about hosting the 2025 BAFTAs?

The British public, along with everyone at BAFTA, is thrilled about Tennant’s return. BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip expressed her excitement. She said:“We couldn’t be happier that David Tennant is returning to host the EE BAFTA Film Awards in 2025. He is an absolute pleasure to work with, and his performance this year was simply outstanding – warm, witty, whip-smart, and with a delightful touch of mischief.”

How fitting!

Tennant also echoed his excitement and slight nerves about hosting. He told Metro: “I definitely have the advantage of this not being my day job,” he continued, “It’s a lovely thing to be asked to do. It’s a huge privilege and it’s very giddy-making.”

He also said: “I hope it will just be as fun as it was before,” the actor continued: “I mean, I quite enjoyed myself. It was a slightly mad thing to be asked to do and not something I ever aspired to or imagined would come my way.”

However, Tennant joked that “pretty much anyone” could do a better job than him—but we strongly disagree. In the UK, hosting the BAFTAs is a huge honor, reserved for true icons. Over the years, has been given to legendary figures like Graham Norton, Stephen Fry, and the incomparable Joanna Lumley.

How did the internet react?

The BAFTAs adore David Tennant so much that they even created a compilation of reactions to his hosting announcement. Unsurprisingly, the comments overflowed with excitement from fans of all ages—young, middle-aged, and old—basically, everyone.

One fan perfectly captured the collective joy by commenting on the Instagram post, “’You’re welcome’. THEY KNOW WHAT WE WANT.”

On X, another expressed their praise towards Tennant. Similarly, another fan simply said: “LET’S GOOOO DAVID!”

But we can’t lie, nothing beats the compilation of comments on the BAFTAs post.

One of the best moments is the compilation of people losing it over recognizing the Doctor Who star by that one stray curl in his hair. Of course, he doesn’t know it’s giving 2014 Zayn Malik vibes!

But the real highlight for us? Tennant filming a TikTok pretending he’s reluctant to host again. For heaven’s sake, we know he’s lying.

On the day his return was announced, the BAFTA TikTok account posted a fun video. The screen shows footage from last year’s ceremony with the text: “David Tennant did such a great job hosting the BAFTAs, he should 100% do it again.” Then the screen flips to a surprised Tennant, who exclaims, “Oh no! Hang on… Ah!”

Legendary, if you ask us, and truly deserving of the title. In fact, so is he. We absolutely can’t wait to watch the 2025 BAFTAs!
