The Russo Brothers have teased details about the links between Tony Stark and Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

Both are played by Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. and the siblings’ comments have led fans to believe Doom’s backstory could share some connections with the fallen Avenger.

Speaking to The Times while promoting their new Netflix movie The Electric State, the Russos were asked about Stark’s fate. They were also quizzed on its links to future storylines.

Anthony Russo quickly put a stop to the questioning but his answer may have given away a subtle plot detail.

“We can’t explain that as it’s part of the story,” explained Anthony, “but there’s nobody else in the world who could play this character the way he’s about to.”

With that, fans took the wording of Anthony’s answer to suggest that Stark’s death was not only the climactic moment of Marvel’s third phase of movies. They think it was potentially something more important to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Throw Marvel’s recent multiverse-messing into the mix and it could transpire that Stark’s death caused some kind of ripple. One that maybe led all the way to Doctor Doom.

We already know that Downey Jr. will play the Fantastic Four villain Victor Von Doom. The news was made official at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024.

Marvel is currently about to launch Phase Six of its cinematic universe. This will kick start with Fantastic Four: The First Steps later this year although it’s unclear whether Downey Jr. will return in this movie.

Among the villains set to feature in director Matt Shakman’s Fantastic Four film are the world eating Galactus, played by British actor Ralph Ineson. It’s rumored Paul Walter Hauser will play another bad guy named Mole Man but this has yet to be officially confirmed.

Whilst promoting their Milly Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt two-hander The Electric State, the Russos have been faced with plenty of Avengers: Doomsday questions.

They were recently asked whether the X-Men will make their debut in the film, to which they provided a cryptic and tongue-in-cheek response.

“Who knows? I don’t know who we’re gonna see. I still don’t know,” said Joe, adding “Anybody in the Marvel bag could show up in this movie.”

Meanwhile, Anthony took the opportunity to make a joke of the question.

“If you close your eyes and use your imagination, you can see anyone you want,” he said. “Whoever tickles your fancy.”
