While successful TV series spawning spinoffs has been a staple of TV for decades, it is usually confined to one or maybe two shows – but there are apparently seven spinoffs to Game of Thrones in development.

Animated and live action

The creator of Game of Thrones, George RR Martin, told the Oxford Writers’ House that seven spinoffs are being developed, of which four are animated and three are live action.

This is in addition to House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel which is currently airing its second season, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is currently in production and will be released sometime in 2025.

One of the spinoffs is Aegon’s Conquest, which again will be a prequel to Game of Thrones, and will focus on Aegon I Targaryen, better known as Aegon the Conqueror. Mattson Tomlin is currently penning a script for this show, which will focus on Aegon’s conquest of Westeros.

Sea Snake could be another of the spinoffs Martin referred to. This is being developed as an animated show and would focus on a character known as Sea Snake, a legendary voyager, who is seen in House of the Dragon and focus on his early years.

Continuing appetite

But the other potential shows have yet to break cover and, as ever, there is the possibility that not all these shows will make it to the screen in the coming years. But what this – in addition to the success of House of the Dragon – does show is that there is still a strong appetite for more tales from Westeros and the world that Martin has created.
