- Trailer gives first look at Jack Black as Steve – and its not what you expect
- Also shows how the movie will look and important plot points
- Release date for the film also confirmed for April 2025
After months of rumor, the first Minecraft trailer has finally dropped – and it looks every bit as odd as you might have expected.
Warner Bros’ film of the hugely popular video game franchise has been in development for years, but finally we can see what the film looks like.
Humans in another world
From the trailer, we see four humans – Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastien Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) – sucked into the familiar blocky world through a mysterious portal. Then we see them discovering the various animals that roam the landscape, as well as some of the many threats that exist in the world.
We also get a first look at Steve, Minecraft’s main character, played by Jack Black. He too is a human in a blocky world – ending speculation whether he would be blockified or not – but a master crafter who will be able to help the foursome’s quest to return to their own world. He has also got to keep the beard, which has become something of a trademark in recent years.
Looks familiar
The world looks familiar to fans of Minecraft but has been given a more realistic CG makeover for the big screen. It also looks like there will be humor, battles and lots of crafting.
To get back home, the four must master the Overworld and protect it from threats by using their imagination and the creative skills that make them unique – and that can help them back in the real world.
Minecraft: The Movie, which is directed by Jared Hess, will hit cinemas on April 4 next year.
