What is the plot of the second season of The Last of Us?

The show will follow the plot of the second part of the zombie apocalypse video game.
According to the show’s official synopsis, the series will pick up after a time-jump. It reads: “Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”
The Naughty Dog-created sequel arrived on shelves back in 2020. It will continue to follow the trials and tribulations of their hard and traumatic journey.
Danger lurks everywhere like zombies and those aware that Ellie represents a potential cure.
Has production started?
Yes! Filming kicked off in February 2024 in Vancouver, a location that matches the Northwest setting of the original game.
How many episodes will The Last Of Us be?

The Last of Us season 2 will consist of seven episodes. Their run-time has yet to be confirmed.
Mazin and Druckmann have revealed the follow-up season will be a few episodes shorter than the 10-parter first season. They explained this was for pacing rather than down to lack of material.
“The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons,” Mazin said. “When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the natural breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.”
They outlined their desire to make every episode “feel like its own blockbuster”, with some episodes nearly movie-length.
Any spoilers for The Last Of Us?
Well, gamers will know the plot, but Mazin and Druckmann have hinted that the next instalment will be a “continuation” of the previous story.
Druckmann said, “More specifically, it’s a continuation of love from the first season, and this is just the dark side of that coin, the pursuit of justice at any cost for the ones you love and the exploration of that.”
Are any more seasons of The Last Of Us promised?
The creator pair have vowed to make a third season and have hinted they could extend it to a fourth.
“We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons because we’re taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too,” Mazin explained. “We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”
Will fan favourites Bill and Frank return to The Last Of Us?
Any reprisal of the beloved characters from the first season, played by Murray Barlett and Nick Offerman, won’t happen here. The third episode, titled Long, Long, Time, was a fan-favourite.
Offerman snagged an Emmy for his role as Bill, the survivalist who falls in love and creates a life with Frank. Previously, he hinted he’d be up for a miniseries following their life. Mazin later clarified there were no official plans to do this.
Who is leading behind the camera?
Well, along with Mazin and Naughty Dog’s Druckman, they will be joined by Long, Long, Time director Peter Hoar once more.
A fresh set of faces are also credited as directors. These names range from Succession’s Mark Mylod, Perry Mason’s Nina Lopez-Corrado, Watchmen’s Stephen Williams and Loki’s Kate Herron.
The show is executive-produced by Carolyn Strauss, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan and Evan Wells.
It is produced by PlayStation Productions, The Mighty Mint, Word Games and Naughty Dog.
