Twenty years we have been waiting, and soon we will have a Legally Blonde prequel. Elle, as the show is called, will be on Amazon Prime and will follow a young Elle Woods in high school. Woods instantly became a fan favorite character when we were introduced to her in 2001’s Legally Blonde. The role subverted expectations of young blonde women because she was a smart and confident woman. Additionally, the role put Reese Witherspoon in the spotlight as a Hollywood actress. The Legally Blonde movies made over $100 million at the box office worldwide and now there is a Legally Blonde 3 to go along with Elle.
Witherspoon is attached to both Elle and Legally Blonde 3. News of the Legally Blonde prequel was announced in April 2024. Fans were in a frenzy about getting to know a young Elle Woods, as well as having her back for a third film. With reboots being all the rage, it makes sense that Amazon would be all for a Legally Blonde prequel. Outside of the movies, Legally Blonde is a huge franchise that even had a musical in 2008.

On the announcement of Elle, Witherspoon expressed her excitement. She posted a video on Instagram in full Elle Woods attire in May 2024. She wrote: Before she became the most famous Gemini vegetarian to graduate from Harvard Law, she was just a regular ‘90s high school girl. And all of you are going to get to know her, next year on @PrimeVideo I’M SO EXCITED!” Talk about a full-circle moment.

When is Elle being released?
There is no set release date yet, but Witherspoon revealed to People that filming would begin in March. “I’m really excited. We start in March,” she told the outlet.
She continued, “I’m really excited because we’re going through the casting process right now and we’re picking who is going to play the young me.” “It’s kind of a trip,” the actress concluded.

What is the plot of the Legally Blonde prequel?
According to the details we have, Elle is about Elle Woods in high school. So the show will focus on teenage Elle Woods navigating life before the shiny doors of Harvard Law. What, like it’s hard?
The IMDB description reads: “Follows Elle Woods’ journey through high school, exploring the formative experiences that mold her into the iconic, confident character we meet in the Legally Blonde film.”
Who is starring in Elle?
Playing young Elle in the series is actress Lexi Minetree. Witherspoon announced the casting on her social media telling Minetree the news. Minetree thanked her family and friends on social media and went on to thank Witherspoon.
She said: “And thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to @reesewitherspoon for handing me down Elle Woods. I already love her so so much, I promise she’s in good hands. P.S. Thank you for showing me how amazing I am going to look in the future, soooo looking forward to that :).”
However, she spoke about the casting process on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Witherspoon replied, “Yes, so many” when asked if she was watching audition tapes. She said, “Oh, these girls, I just love all of them so much.”
On the casting process, she said: “Now it’s different because we used to audition and we’d go into a casting office. Now they have to shoot, produce, and do all the costumes. They have to put together videos that are basically like a mini-movie.”
Witherspoon continued to express her admiration for the girls, although she didn’t give any details about who she was thinking of.
Casting Elle’s mom
Now that we have our Elle Woods, we need the next most important person, her mom. On 11 March her casting was announced. June Diane Raphael will play Eva, the famous Elle Woods’ mom. Raphael’s biggest role was playing Brianna Hanson for seven seasons of Grace and Frankie.
Who is involved in Elle?
Reese Witherspoon is involved with Elle, with her company, Hello Sunshine. Laura Kittrell is the showrunner. Witherspoon is producing alongside Lauren Neustadter and Lauren Kisilevsky. Hello Sunshine previously produced the hit series, Daisy Jones and The Six.
It was announced that Elle will be directed by Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore on 20 February by Deadline. Pitch Perfect was his directional debut. His recent movie included Jennifer Lopez’s comedy Shotgun Wedding.
There is also a second spin-off in the works, written and produced by Gossip Girl’s Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.
