“CHALAMEEEEET!” one surname, countless laughs. As Adam Sandler riffed with host Conan O’Brien at the Oscars last night, the Happy Gilmore star – bedecked in his traditional leisurewear-laden uniform of a hoodie and basketball shorts – spotted the owner of said surname in the audience and couldn’t resist embracing him while bellowing it into his face in typically overzealous, slapstick fashion.

Sandler’s delivery of Timothée Chalamet’s surname sprung into the public consciousness at this year’s Golden Globes, when host Nikki Glaser exclaimed, “Your name sounds like something Adam Sandler would say.” Ever the eager showman, the Uncut Gems leading man dusted the French surname with an appropriate amount of Sandler…….ness? and we as a society rightfully decided that is how it should be pronounced forever more.

And while we hope that this becomes a running gag during award season every year from now on, the pair’s interactions over the last few weeks – which also included Sandler introducing Chalamet’s musical performance on the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary show – got a fair amount of people wondering if Sandler and CHALAMEEEEET had an existing friendship before the Big Daddy star changed the two time Academy Award nominees last name a pop culture movement.

In fact, Sandler and Chalamet have shared the silver screen together, although only once before.

Back in 2014, Jason Reitman directed the critically panned comedy-drama Men, Women and Children, in which Sandler plays Don Truby, a husband in a struggling marriage with a son addicted to online pornography. The film follows several parents and teens as they battle addiction in the modern, technology obsessed world.

In a supporting role is the character of Danny Vance, played by a young (sorry, younger) Timothée Chalamet in his movie debut. The role would come slightly before Chalamet appeared in Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar, alongside Matthew McConaughey.

The unlikely duo, seperated by an age gap of almost 30 years, also share a love of basketball, in particular the New York Knicks, and regularly take in pick up games. So much so that the pair took each other on in a game in New York back in 2023.

Now, about that Timothée Chalamet cameo in Happy Gilmore 2…
