As the film stomps closer, its debut trailer has teased some dark action – darker than the stuff we’ve already seen in the two trilogies that preceded it. Throw a rogue Reddit thread into the mix and audiences are expecting something nastier than usual.

So will Jurassic World Rebirth be rated R? Here’s what we know for sure.

Why do fans think Jurassic World Rebirth will be rated R?

There are a few reasons why fans think Edwards film might be rated R. For starters, it has a new dinosaur, one that takes its cues from one of cinema’s most notorious movie monsters.

Labelled the D-Rex, this mutant dinosaur is something that was cooked up by Jurassic World scientists but deemed too dangerous for the actual park. As a result, it was left to linger on the island Bennett and her team will visit in Jurassic World Rebirth – the so-called ‘Site C’.

Early glimpses of the D-Rex give off a tone reminiscent of horror movies. In fact, Edwards has even stated that he took inspiration from the Alien franchise’s Xenomorph when designing his new big-bad. This can clearly be seen in the mutant dino’s large, domed head.

These factors could lead some fans to believe the film could earn a R Rating.

A Reddit thread also threw fuel on the fire after a fan spotted what appeared to be an ‘R Rating’ logo on a supposed poster for the film. However, fellow Redditors quickly assured the fan that what he had discovered was a fake.

At the moment, the film is without an official rating. That said, despite its dark imagery, it’s unlikely that the film will get this extreme movie certificate.

An R Rating indicates that a feature has adult material that is considered unsuitable for anyone aged 17 or under.

No previous instalment of the Jurassic Park or Jurassic World franchises have received this certification, with most being PG-13. This indicates a movie could include things like strong language or intense scenes, and parental guidance is advised.

If Edwards’ film were to gain an R Rating, it would lose huge chunks of its under 17 audience, all of whom would find it difficult to see the movie without a parent or guardian in attendance.

While it remains unconfirmed, it’s unlikely that Jurassic World Rebirth will get an R Rating.
