- Disney sequel has been a hit with movie goers
- Moana 2 has now taken $600 million at the global box office
- Moana 2 still has a long way to go to catch leading movie of 2024

Disney’s animated sequel Moana 2 is continuing its success at the box office – after takings this weekend, it is now the fifth biggest film of the year.
Fifth biggest movie of 2024
Deadline reported that Moana 2 has now taken $600 million globally – split roughly equally between sales in the US and the rest of the world – despite only being out for two weeks.
This continues Moana 2’s stellar progress at the box office – the movie set a new record for the biggest five-day opening at the box office ever last week. Moana 2 made $221 million in its first five days of release, beating the $204 million taken by the Super Mario Bros Movie in April 2023.
Moana 2 picks up the action three years after the events of the first film. This time, according to the official synopsis, Moana gores on an expansive journey in search of people beyond the shores of Motunui, the island where she lives.
Joined by Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
Wicked gains
Disney will have hopes that Moana 2 could break the $1 billion barrier before it ends its theatrical run. Thus far, only Inside Out 2 (taking $1.7 billion) and Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.3 billion) have broken the $1 billion barrier this year so far. Despicable Me 4 took $970 million during its run in theaters, with Dune: Part Two taking $7.1 billion.
Hot on the heels of Moana 2 at the box office is Wicked, which has now taken more than $455 million globally. Wicked has just been nominated for a Golden Globe in the best picture – comedy or musical category. One of its stars, Ariana Grande, has just received a nomination as best supporting actress at the Golden Globes for her role as Glinda.
