Matt Reeves will indeed be directing The Batman 2. And James Gunn seems confused as to why that was even up for debate.

A recent report had failed to name Reeves as the director for the heavily delayed superhero sequel, leading some to question whether or not the director would be returning for a second visit to Gotham City.

James Gunn Is Confused

However, when a fan on Threads posed the question to DC Studios boss Gunn, he had a very blunt (and slightly confused) response.

Filming for The Batman 2 was due to commence this year, but has since been pushed back to March, 2026. Initially the film was due for an already-delayed release of October, 2026. However, that has now been extended to 2027, five years after The Batman. An as-yet-unnamed Tom Cruise film is reportedly taking The Batman 2’s place in the Fall 2026 release schedule.

The Batman 2 Due For 2027 Release

The sequel was first announced in April 2022 and it was confirmed in January 2023 that it would come to theaters in October 2024.

However, thanks to the Hollywood strikes – which unfolded between July and November 2023 – numerous films were pushed back. Ultimately, The Batman 2 was no exception.

Only a few returning stars have been confirmed to appear in the sequel at the time of writing. These are Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne / Batman, Farrell’s Penguin AKA Oswald Cobblepot, Andy Serkis as Bat-butler Alfred Pennyworth and Jeffrey Wright as Gotham’s Commissioner Gordon.

Fans will also be hoping to see the return of Dano’s Riddler, the Joker, played briefly by Irish star Barry Keoghan in the first film. Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman AKA Selina Kyle could also make an appearance.

But First, Superman

However, before anything Batman related can happen, first up for Gunn’s DC Chapter One: Gods and Monsters is Superman. The return of the Man of Steel is Gunn’s first feature-length effort in the new DC Universe and will feature David Corenswet in the lead role. Rachel Brosnahan stars as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor.

Superman hits theatres on July 11, with a further trailer due to be unveiled this Wednesday, May 14. Can big Clark and the gang keep DC fans satiated until we head back to Gotham in 2027, though?
