- There is going to be a Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot
- Original cast member and Buffy herself Sarah Michelle Gellar is involved
- The Buffy reboot was announced in February and there are some updates

The Buffy reboot is in the works, and some fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer are delighted. Original leading lady Sarah Michelle Gellar is involved in the Hulu project. The reboot was announced by Variety on 3 February. Sources told the outlet that the reboot was “nearing a pilot order at Hulu.” Some other details were revealed about the reboot’s plot and who was involved. Much to the delight of fans, Gellar confirmed the reboot was in the works on 6 February with an Instagram post.
Reports even suggest late Buffy star Michelle Trachtenberg was ‘in talks’ to join the show, although Gellar hasn’t spoken about the rumor.
You can read her post below.
Gellar explains how she got a call from Gail Berman who wanted her to sit down with director Chloé Zhao. Eventually, Gellar took a meeting and spoke to Zhao for hours about the meaning of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its impact. Fast forward a few years, and Gellar put together a team with Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. The group “landed on an idea”, Gellar said.
Concluding her post, Gellar vowed to do the reboot “right” and thanked the fans who pestered her to revisit the Buffyverse.

Now a month later, the reboot has been confirmed to be progressing. But what recent updates have there been? Stay tuned to find out.
What has Sarah Michelle Gellar said about the reboot?

Slowly but surely, the reboot is “progressing,” at least according to Gellar.
The Buffy reboot is progressing

In an exclusive interview with People, she discussed the progress. “We’ve set up our offices, which means things are progressing probably faster than I’d anticipated,” Gellar told the outlet. “But it’s going to be a process, I think,” she continued.
The 47-year-old continued by saying people should “be patient” so she and the team can make the show. Previously the actress vowed to do the Buffy reboot “right” in her announcement post, so she is probably trying to adhere to that promise.
“There was no world where I thought Chloé Zhao was going to call me and partner with me, and ask my advice on things and my opinion — especially because she hasn’t done television,” Gellar said.
On her aim for the upcoming reboot, Gellar says she wants to “bring more people to her” (Buffy) as it is the “greatest gift” for the actress. How sweet.
Gellar wants new and old fans to enjoy the show
This is less of an update and more of an answer to a question, but could still provide context clues about what the reboot will include. In an interview with Glamour, the Dexter: Original Sin star spoke about her intention with the reboot.
“That’s what my goal is. I mean, my goal is that it entices both groups and that the heart of the show is there, but then for people that maybe haven’t seen the original, that it’s just as exciting for these new characters for them to meet them as well. So that’s the hope,” Gellar told the outlet.
Charisma Carpenter “hopes to be a part” of the Buffy reboot

On Buffy The Vampire Slayer and its spinoff Angel, Charisma Carpenter played the role of Cordelia Chase. Cordelia starts as Buffy’s high-school frenemy who is rich, snobby, and snarky. However, she goes on to date one of Buffy’s friends and exes and becomes a confident and brave woman who assists Angel with his detective agency to help vulnerable people.
Carpenter played the role on Buffy from 1997 until 1999 and on Angel from 1999 to 20004. Fans were angry at the treatment of Cordelia on Angel by the show’s creator Joss Whedon.
Whedon was exposed for allegedly creating toxic work environments on his sets. Carpenter spoke out against him in 2021 and received support from her co-stars. She shed some light on why her character left Angel prematurely.

Is Cordelia coming back?
Nobody thought Carpenter would ever return to a Buffy project considering her experience with Whedon, but he is not involved in the reboot. Since he isn’t, she seems to be more on board.
Carpenter said it would be her “dream” to a crowd at Indiana Comic Con in mid-March.
“I hope so. From what I understand, there isn’t even a pilot at the moment, so I hope — if I am involved — I hope so in some fashion it’s more in a substantive way. That would be my dream,” Carpenter told the crowd.
Carpenter said it would be “poetic” if she were asked to come back to play Cordy.
“I think it would be very poetic to be invited back, especially having the people that were involved, to begin with, the best parts of it, Gail Berman, and then having Chloé Zhao direct — Oscar winner and, in general, badass — and then the Zuck sisters who are incredible writers and then obviously Sarah backing it and I hope to be part of it,” The 54-year-old said.
