Timothée Chalamet made history at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, last night, and drew enthusiastic praise for his acceptance speech.

The 29-year-old took home the award for Best Male Actor in a Leading Role, for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, becoming the youngest ever recipient of the award in the process.

Taking to the stage to claim his award, Chalamet then delivered an unexpectedly forthright acceptance speech about how he was inspired by greatness in his quest to become one of the greats.

“I know we’re in a subjective business, but the truth is, I’m really in pursuit of greatness. I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats. I’m inspired by the greats. I’m inspired by the greats here tonight. I’m as inspired by Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando and Viola Davis as I am by Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, and I want to be up there. So I’m deeply grateful. This doesn’t signify that, but it’s a little more fuel. it’s a little more ammo to keep going. Thank you so much.”

The honesty of the speech perhaps took a few people aback, as it is not often that an actor openly admits such a thing in a public forum. But the sincerity with which Chalamet delivered the words won audiences over, with passionate responses being elicited all over social media in the immediate aftermath of the speech.

The SAG Award victory was Chalamet’s first major acting award victory. He is also nominated for Best Actor at this year’s Oscars. It is Chalamet’s second nomination for the award, after he received one for his performance in 2018’s Call Me By Your Name.
