Pixar sequel Inside Out 2 has become the top grossing film worldwide just eight days after its release, but which other films have fared well in the first six months of 2024?

Inside Out 2 takes us back into Riley’s headquarters where Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear are navigating Riley through life. But as she enters her teenage years, the emotions are joined by new arrivals, who turn their lives – and Riley’s – upside down. So far, the film has taken $724 million at the worldwide box office, according to Box Office Mojo.

This means it has overtaken another sequel, Dune: Part Two, which has sat atop the global box office statistics since May.

Another blockbuster, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, is now in third place in the box office list, having taken $567.6 million and has become one of the most successful movies in the Monsterverse.

Kung Fu Panda 4 sits fourth in the list, just $24 million behind Godzilla. The continuing adventures of Po, the titular panda, voiced by Jack Black, continues to pack the audiences in.

A returning franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes – seven years after the last film – has performed well, taking $381.5 million.

A film currently in theaters and that could move up this list – and another fourth instalment in a franchise – is Bad Boys: Ride or Die. The franchise shows no sign of waning, having taken more than $289 million so far, so it is little surprise that a fifth instalment is already being talked about.

In seventh place is The Garfield Movie. This latest big screen outing for the lasagne-loving black and ginger cat – this time voiced by Chris Pratt – has performed respectably, taking in $230.6 million.

Another big-budget blockbuster to make the top 10 is Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. This second outing for the next generation Ghostbusters, led by McKenna Grace, hasn’t performed as well as hoped, taking just over $200 million.

Ninth on the list is family film IF. Starring Ryan Reynolds, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt and others, the story of a girl who can see everyone’s imaginary friends, has charmed audiences around the world and taken $181.3 million at the box office.

Rounding out the top 10 is biopic Bob Marley: One Love, which took $179.4 million. The movie charts how Marley overcame adversity to become an icon through his revolutionary music.
