Jurassic World Rebirth is about to plunge us back into a franchise where dinosaurs and humans interact. Let’s face it, it rarely ends well.

The film will form the seventh instalment of a movie series spearheaded by movie maestro Steven Spielberg in 1993. His original Jurassic Park not only introduced us to the potential of CGI filmmaking but also a multitude of stories that could be based in this fictional world where man has artificially recreated dinosaurs.

The film gave birth to two direct sequels including 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park and 2001’s Jurassic Park 3. A legacy sequel trilogy arrived in 2015 which itself spawned follow-ups Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in 2018 and Jurassic World: Dominion in 2022.

Cut to 2025 and Scarlett Johansson and Wicked stand-out Jonathan Bailey will lead the way in Jurassic World Rebirth. However, with so much water under the bridge, it can be tricky to understand where and when his new instalment is set to take place.

Jurassic World Rebirth is the seventh film in the Jurassic Park franchise and a sequel to 2022’s Jurassic World: Dominion. It is set five years after the events of the previous movie.

Jurassic World: Dominion was helmed by Colin Trevorrow, the same filmmaker behind the original Jurassic World. The first instalment introduced audiences to a fully functioning Jurassic World theme park set on the original Jurassic Park island of Isla Nublar. Sadly, things don’t stay safe for long and when an experimental new lab-created dinosaur escapes, chaos quickly rears its head.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom came next, directed by J.A Bayona. This film uncovered a clandestine operation auctioning off Isla Nublar’s surviving dinosaurs to the highest bidder. By the end of this dark sequel, dinosaurs had made their way out of cages and into the real world, with humans facing a future where they were forced to live side-by-side with prehistoric beasts.

We left this trilogy with Jurassic World: Dominion which Trevorrow returned to direct. This caught up with the story four years later and showed the impact of human and dinosaur interactions interspersed with a conspiracy related to a genetics corporation. By the time the credits rolled, dinosaurs were still living in various locations across the globe.

Jurassic World Rebirth takes place five years later, as explained in its official synopsis.

“Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived.

“The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.”

What happens in Jurassic World 4?

According to the same log-line, Johansson will play a covert operations expert named Zora Bennett. Together with palaeontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Bailey), they must track down the DNA of the three largest surviving dinosaurs.

However, along the way, they cross paths with a family who have found themselves lost in a dangerous area littered with dinosaurs. Together, “they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades.”

Speaking about Jurassic World Rebirth’s timeline, screenwriter David Koepp explained that the story stays loyal to what has come before while exploring new territory.

“We didn’t want to deny any events that occurred,” he told the Slash Film podcast. “[The new film is set] in that world. But how might that world have changed in the last five years, and whose story is this now?”
