Lillard teased the news via a cryptic Instagram post. It referenced one of his key lines from director Wes Craven’s 1996 original.

The image showed a hand writing a sentence on a notepad. The message read: “My mom and dad are going to be sooo mad at me!!” Shortly afterwards, the news was made official by Deadline.

The move marks Lillard’s first return to the Scream franchise after starring as one of its original killers.

He’ll join franchise mainstays Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox in Scream 7 which is being directed by Kevin Williamson.

Matthew Lillard Scream character

For all those unaware, Lillard played Stu Macher in the first Scream. Together with Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis, he was one of the original killers behind Ghostface’s first spree in Woodsboro.

The former boyfriend of Drew Barrymore’s Casey Becker, he went on to date Rose McGowan’s Tatum Riley before she was murdered at a party at his house. At the end of Scream, Stu is revealed to be the accomplice of Billy, helping him to carry out his massacre of people associated with Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott.

Billy’s motivation is pinned on the fact that Sidney’s father had an affair with his mother resulting in her leaving his family and Billy feeling abandoned. Billy ropes Stu into his attacks as an accomplice, with Lillard’s character citing peer pressure as his primary motivation for getting involved.

When Sidney discovers that the duo are behind the Woodsboro murders, reality starts to hit home for Stu who complains that his parents are going to be angry at him. It’s this line that Lillard referenced in his recent Instagram reveal confirming that he will be in Scream 7. Billy and Stu even resort to attacking each other to frame Sidney for their murders.

After lashing out, Sidney ultimately gets the better of Stu and electrocutes him with a television, leaving him dead… apparently.

Who is Matthew Lillard playing in Scream 7?

Did Stu survive the events at the end of Scream? Does he have an identical twin? Will Stu appear in flashback form?

As it stands, each of these questions remains unanswered. Reports of Lillard’s return to this iconic horror franchise are still fresh so little is known for sure about how he’ll fit into the overall story.

What we do know is that he’ll join Campbell and Cox as Prescott and journalist Gale Weathers respectively. Scott Foley who played Roman Berger in Scream 3 is also set to appear.

Together, they’ll be joined by Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown as Chad and Mindy from  2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI. Newcomers to the franchise include Joel McHale as Sidney’s husband Mark and Isabel May as their daughter.

Other new cast members include Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp and Mark Consuelos but their characters remain under wraps for now.
