- Tangled, the updated retelling of Rapunzel, the latest to get the live-action treatment
- High-profile director has been linked with the project
- Rapunzel was recently voted as the favorite Disney princess in a poll

Disney’s quest to remake all its treasured animated movies in live action is continuing, with Tangled the latest to get the treatment.
Tangled live-action remake
Tangled was a huge hit on its release in theaters in 2010 and has continued to delight generations ever since on DVD and streaming services. A modern retelling of the Brothers’ Grimm’s fairytale Rapunzel, it told the story of a young princess with magical hair who is imprisoned in a tower. She escapes with the aid of a thief, Flynn, and then goes on a journey to discover her true identity and finally escape her captor.
Deadline revealed that Michael Gracey – best known for directing The Greatest Showman – is in negotiations to direct the movie.
While Disney hasn’t confirmed the plot of Tangled, from experience with similar live-action remakes by the House of Mouse it will likely follow that of the animated version.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has written the most recent draft of the script. She is also busy with the reboot of the I Know What You Did Last Summer horror franchise currently. However, there is no word yet on any casting details.
Enduring popularity
Rapunzel has an enduring place in the hearts of Disney fans, and was recently voted as the favorite Disney princess ever in a Pubity ‘You Decide’ poll. Rapunzel won 57% of the vote in the final, taking the crown ahead of Mulan, who took 43%.
As usual with Pubity’s You Decide competitions, the greatest Disney princess of all time was decided after a series of knockout rounds. Sixteen princesses started, but only one could win. En route to the final, Rapunzel defeated Cinderella in the first round, Princess Jasmine from Aladdin in the quarter final and Belle from Beauty and the Beast in the semi final.
