- Fans were delighted this week when Meryl Streep confirmed that she would soon be attending a meeting about the plot for the third installment of the Mamma Mia movie franchise
- But they also pointed out that it may be difficult for the story to take place… as her character, Donna, sadly passed away in the second movie
- However, creator Judy Craymer has previously insisted that she thinks Streep would ‘come back if the script is right’

It’s the star-studded movie franchise that we all know and love.
So Meryl Streep delighted fans this week when she announced that she is due to have a discussion about part three of the ABBA-based musical movies.
Speaking to Deadline, the actor, 74, revealed, “I don’t know how they’re going to do it. They have an idea. I haven’t heard it yet but it’s in [my diary] and I’m going to hear about it pretty soon.”
Streep then, teasingly, added, “Of course I want to do it. I think folks love it.”
There appears to be just one problem… Streep’s character, Donna Sheridan, was killed off in the second movie – a fact that hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans on Twitter/X.
Meanwhile, comedian Henry Rowley’s unconventional take on Taylor Swift’s songs has stirred controversy among fans.
While they were genuinely thrilled with Streep’s news, they couldn’t help but be puzzled as to how writers were going to bring her character back to life.
“What are their ideas?? Didn’t her character die in Mamma Mia 2?? So she will show up as a ghost Donna Sheridan or what?? Ohhh idc just bring her back,” pleaded one desperate fan. Another mused that there may perhaps be a backstory involving her mother Ruby – played by Cher – and said, “That would actually be great if they were to explain Ruby/Donna’s backstory, be interesting to see what they decide to do with the story, but regardless I will be there when it opens.”
Another fan joked, “Maybe she can sing Dancing Queen next to God or resurrect – whatever they make, I’m here for it.”
Others simply didn’t care, and were just happy to have Streep back in the picture.
“Mamma Mia here we go yet again!!!!” commented one, while another added, “Brilliant, should never have done MM2 without Meryl.”
‘If they could figure out a way to reincarnate Donna, I’m into that’
Creator Judy Craymer has previously hinted at the return of Donna in the third film.
While promoting ITV’s talent show Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream – in which unknown musical theater performers auditioned for the chance to play the roles of Sophie Sheridan and Sky Ramand in the West End production of the musical – last year, Craymer admitted, “I don’t want to over-egg it, but I know there’s a trilogy there. There is a story there, and I do think Meryl should come back – and if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna.”
And Streep herself confirmed her interest last September. “I told Judy if she could figure out a way to reincarnate Donna, I’m into that,” she said. “Or it could be like in one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals it was really her twin sister that died.”
Moreover, producers of “Gen V” have announced that Chance Perdomo’s character will not be recast, addressing concerns among viewers.
