The inspiration behind Eternal Sunshine and Hampstead

The reveal is part of Grande’s upcoming deluxe album Eternal Sunshine: Brighter Days Ahead which releases on 28 March. The tracklist has been revealed by Grande in a video on Instagram.

The 31-year-old is blessing fans with six new tracks including an extended version of Intro (End Of The World) and the new London-named song. Eternal Sunshine was released on 8 March last year to positive reviews from critics. The concept album is based on the 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In the film, a man wants to do a procedure to erase memories of his girlfriend, only to realize he still loves her, so he does not go through with it.

Many fans thought the album centered around Grande’s marriage and break-up with real estate agent Dalton Gomez. Gomez and Grande married in 2021 but separated in February 2023 and divorced in March 2024.

Since the summer of 2023, Grande has been happily dating her Wicked co-star Ethan Slater. Slater filed for divorce in July 2023 from his wife Lilly Jay, which sparked controversy around Slater and Grande’s relationship.

Now Grande is releasing a deluxe version of her album, fans are talking about the track names. But what does the track Hampstead mean? Read on to find out.

What does the track name ‘Hampstead mean?’

Hampstead may be a significant track on the album as it is track number 19 and closes out the deluxe album. Also, it is the only track with a capitalized name. Yes, it is a place name, but any fan of the singer knows she doesn’t capitalize her track names. And if she does, it’s rare!

Everyone knows Grande spent a stint living in London when she was filming Wicked since the movies were filmed in succession with each other. However, where exactly was unknown to fans, considering how private celebrities are until Grande revealed it herself.

Ariana Grande said she lived in the area

The track name is most likely a reference to the north London area because Grande did live there. Speaking with BBC Radio One, Grande reminisced on her time in London. She said: “The UK is my favorite, I miss it here so much. I loved it here so much. I loved living here.”

In the same interview, the We Can’t Be Friends singer gave fans the lowdown on her low-key London living. “I was in Hampstead when I was here, and I loved my walks on the Heath,” Grande said.

The singer continued, “I loved meandering around and visiting different shops and places and pubs.”

A famous image was posted of Grande in 2023 in her first public appearance since her split was announced. She attended the Wimbledon tennis tournament with Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey in Wimbledon, south London.

Hampstead Heath is a popular green space in London and is home to one of the highest points in London. The area is attractive because of its fancy coffee shops, and independent stores. Parliament Hill is a popular spot for sightseeing and walking dogs, so it’s no surprise Grande loved it. We imagine she walked her beloved pooch Toulouse there many times!

What could the song be about?

Fan speculation about the song title has been rampant on X. Many Arianators thought the song’s title would relate to something deeply personal.

A popular fan account posted, “HER MOST PERSONAL SONG IS COMING”.

Another user posted a Google screenshot of Hampstead’s location and said, “?? She is so natural with this”.

Reference to the Dalton Gomez breakup?

One Arianator thought that Hampstead was where the breakup of Grande and Gomez happened.

They posted, “THIS HAPPENED IN HAMPSTEAD.” A photo of Grande and Gomez together was attached to the post.

Interestingly, the photo was from January 2023 and the two’s separation date was listed as 20 February 2023.

One fan speculated the song goes beyond the area she lived in and focuses on what she was going through then. By the time of her separation date, Grande had been living in London for a while to film Wicked.

The post read: “Hampstead is where Ariana lived when she was in the UK when she was filming Wicked… the last song is about her getting through her divorce and finding herself again which is all she did in Hampstead.”

That is not a bad guess, honestly.

Reconnection and re-growth?

Other fans speculated the track and the symbolism of Hampstead is about Grande finding herself again.

Meanwhile, another fan thought that Hampstead could be sad and whimsical as Grande could be “reminiscing about a past life in Hampstead”. With her past life, she could be thinking about when she was married. Just a thought.

What’s that?

Another fan expressed confusion about the track name.

Well, fans will remain confused until have the song. Stay tuned for updates on Eternal Sunshine Deluxe and Grande!
